Cowboy Bebop

E6: Sympathy for the Devil. I rather enjoyed this Ep. The demon child was well done. Valentine’s relationship with Ein is funny but I want more from them. Mostly the Blues harp (or in Japanese beru-sa ha-pa) really set the tone. This is so much about the soundtrack.

E7: Heavy Metal Queen. Gay space truckers? Didn’t see that coming. It’s something I might’ve expected in today’s anime but for ‘98, it was progressive (Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were earlier I think, plus there’s a lot of day villains but I’m not sure exactly about their appearance dates). I liked the cat.

I am enjoying to overall vibe of this anime, although I’m disappointed about the martial arts. I thought there would be more of that since this is held in such high regard by many in the martial world. Must just be for the style of it.

E8: The Venus ep went for a concept that I've always imagined would be interesting - what if other planets triggered allergies? Finally Valentine shows her stuff and Jet references Bruce Lee in the 'be like water' schtick. Maybe there's a future piece in the Bruce Lee connection. Another random gay scene when Valentine busts in on some gay dudes in flagrante delicto. Now I get why PPFY is so into this show.

Okay, in all fairness, Doc Yeti is spot on with his comment about nailing the look of the universe. It's a well constructed space, clever yet it doesn't dwell on itself gratuitously. More nasty public toilets. A lot happens in space toilets apparently.

In space, no one can hear your stream.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

E9 (I think - I might’ve lost count) Nice surreal view of a hacker’s journey even though it made no sense. The drone was like prophesy given that this was ‘98. The AI satellite was just good sci-fi. Given that this is over 20 years old, it had decent foresight. The music was off in this ep, but it revealed the how things got how they are - how this is post-apocalypse regarding earth. This Ep explained a lot about the CB universe.

E10 (my count was right) Good backstory on Jet’s history on Ganymede, finally filling out his character. Strangely poignant.

Wait so Edward is part of the crew now? Not fond of this character. Better not eat into Ein or Valentine screen time.

Valentine spends this episode sunbathing in a bikini. She’s hawt. I mean for an anime character. Ain’t no hentai fetishist here. Curious to see how she’s depicted in live action.

E11: A sideways parody of Alien and 2001. Good to see the whole crew involved. I didn’t realize the Bebop was such a big ship but it makes sense. What is up with Edward?

I was delighted to see Spike grab a foil from a bunch of foils as he prepared to hunt the alien.

The next ep is a two-parter. Looking forward to that. Eps 12-13 & 23-24 (finale) are two-parters.

E12-13: The previous Ep was set up for breaking the gang apart. Good device for this 2-parter.

Mysterious new backstory for Spike which I imagine will develop in future.

I didn’t realize CB was so LGBTQ inclusive. Gren took it up to a whole new level - didn’t we that coming at all. The first topless scene.

There’s a lot of smoking in this such which adds to its jazz noir vibe.

The double Ep doubled down on style and sax. Good music in this Ep, particularly if you like sax.

I’m not clear how everyone recovered from the sickness form the ignored lobster fridge in the previous episode - I guess they just got better when the fridge was jettisoned?

I’m now at the halfway point.

E14 bohemian rhapsody. A chess master tale - somewhat unresolved in the end. Strange story. Ed kinda bugs me.

E15 My Funny Valentine - Faye’s backstory was great. Good Ep. Hope there’s an Ep like that for Ein.

Woah - I finally got to the end (Netflix does that stupid ‘next episode’ thing) and saw the preview for the next Ep which was quite funny. Have these been going on all along? Dammit Netflix and your binge inducing rollovers. That’s been shaving off some choice bits.

E16: I hoped Black Dog Serenade would be about Ein, but it was about Jet’s backstory and how he lost his arm. Good jaded cop tale. And now I’m watching the next Ep previews, which are funny.

tQ was in countdown to departure last night. I watched three eps while she packed for her trip.

It's fine. Does anime always look like Speed Racer? I'm not really engaged by it. But I will probably watch a few more episodes.

Because all Japanese anime looks alike? Bro, you really need to check out more anime. Try Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell, Batman Ninja, Sword Art Online, or The Way of the House Husband.

It didn’t hook me until Ep 6 or 7 but I’m thoroughly enjoying it now.

e17 Mushroom Samba
My fav ep so far. Ein takes the lead, with Ed. There's a blaxploitation angle replete with...watermelons. The coffin dragging vendetta got a genuine lol from me. The music is so on point. But mostly...Mushrooms!

e18 Speak Like a Child: more backstory on Faye. It gets even more convoluted. The Betamax riff was fun. The best part was the post credits next episode teaser, done by Ein, who speaks at the end.

I saw two more last night as bumpers to Squid Game. I like the backstory episode or threats from the past as goes to take on Vicious.

Do they ever make any money? Or is it always Beef with Broccoli, hold the beef? At the beginning of every episode Netflix warns me about smoking and nudity. I've seen the smoking. I have yet to see the nudity except for a picture inside the nudie magazine.

They lose money as fast as they make it - comically so.

There will be nudity. Toplessness. And it’s not going to go well.

Beyond broccoli there will be ... mushrooms!

Now that I've seen a few of the animated episodes, this live action trailer makes much more sense. I've been informed that the people doing the dubbing are the original voice actors. It's fun to see the live action versions of a couple of the animated episodes.

The most important thing is that they have the same music makers. That’s key to the whole thing. That’s the bebop.
