Watched this with my mom on Halloween night, pausing to give out candy occasionally. My mom can't hear for beans, but I had the subtitles on and very large. I know she was missing quite a bit of story, but when kids came to the door and I paused it, I would try to catch her up.
I was worried the grandma story line might upset her, but she seemed fine, so I don't know if she didn't follow what was going on, or doesn't identify, or what...
In the end, she/we enjoyed it. It was very sweet. marcel is so innocent. My mom wants a Marcel the Shell patch to sew onto her Model A club vest now, so that's a pretty big endorsement!
