Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021) - Drunk Monk - 08-27-2023
A quirky delight, heartwarming and genuine in the most unexpected ways. It totally deserved its Oscar. So sweet. A wonderful family film.
A filmmaker starts documenting Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate who absolutely kills it). It’s never clear what Marcel is, a shell with shoes, one googly eye and a mouth. He lives in an Airbnb with his grandma (voiced by Isabella Rosellini). Everything hinges on the stop-motion Marcel, who makes charming observations about life and the world through his naive lens. Some fine storytelling in a magical world based in reality (the Airbnb and filmmaker are live action). There’s some solid feels in this.
D00M recommended especially if you enjoy stop motion.

Watched this with my mom on Halloween night, pausing to give out candy occasionally. My mom can't hear for beans, but I had the subtitles on and very large. I know she was missing quite a bit of story, but when kids came to the door and I paused it, I would try to catch her up.
I was worried the grandma story line might upset her, but she seemed fine, so I don't know if she didn't follow what was going on, or doesn't identify, or what...
In the end, she/we enjoyed it. It was very sweet. marcel is so innocent. My mom wants a Marcel the Shell patch to sew onto her Model A club vest now, so that's a pretty big endorsement!

I meant to start a thread on this, but never did. It was both funny and touching. Since they had only done shorts before, I didn't think it would work over a whole movie, but it did.
Christina loves this movie. She bought the figurine
