Don't even dismiss James T. Kirk. BTW, I hear tell of a very dangerous DOOM mission regarding Shatner and Lynch Castle, but at this point, it's only rumors...
It didn't read as a 'let's blame society' flick for me at all. For me, it was more of an exercise in style and breaking the comicbook-to-movie mold. That being said, I don't wholeheartedly recommend this. I'm astonished it did as well as it did. Phoenix was good in this, but I too share a general disdain for him. I don't know why. Usually I find his work overrated. This was an exception for me.
