Joker - Drunk Monk - 12-04-2019 This made me rethink comic book movies entirely. A tour de force for Phoenix, an actor that I often find overrated but he earns his reputation for shadowy characters in...well not spades, in jokers. It's a fresh original vision for comic-based films, not the Mindless-Candy-Universe, but a journey into madness and chaos with echoes of Taxi Driver, accentuated by Deniro's appearance. It turns one of the most iconic comic villains sideways, with nods to the archetypal municipality of Gotham, and sly comments on the hellish society that is our real world now. Many complain that the DCEC is too dark. This is the darkest yet. I found it imperfect yet engrossing. No swordfights. Still DOOM recommended. RE: Joker - cranefly - 12-05-2019 Haven't seen this, didn't think anyone would like it, and expected it to be a major bomb. I was somewhat wrong, with the emphasis on somewhat. It's looking more and more like a must see, for me. RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 12-05-2019 $1B+ globally Honestly I'm a bit surprised it has so much appeal. There's a rebel spirit to it, an anarchic rebel, but so much of the world is on the brink of rebellion now that it resonates. I gotta hand most of why it works to Joaquin (there’s even some Oscar buzz) plus the dissonnate cello-heavy soundtrack heightens the tension. But yeah. It’s worth your attention. Like I said, it’s imperfect but engrossing. RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 02-09-2020 the quadruple crown golden globe, sag, bafta and now oscar. who's laughing now? RE: Joker - Greg - 02-10-2020 The soundtrack won a lot of awards as well for that woman whose name no one can pronounce, Hildur Guðnadóttir RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 02-10-2020 Joachim did deliver an engaging performance. I'll give him that. I can see where it would appeal to the tortured artist, and the whole meta-schtick about how he becomes a media star speaks to Hollywood in that self-promotional way. I'm astounded that he took all 4 of the big awards this year for it. I thought sure Downey would get one for Endgame. not. MCU acting. meh. can't it all be done by cgi now? ![]() RE: Joker - King Bob - 02-10-2020 The more clips I see of this the less I want to see it. It just seems like "let's blame society." And Phoenix seems to be edging into Shatner territory. He was a little already in Gladiator. Plus he's a jackass. Phoenix, well, "why so serious?" Don't even dismiss James T. Kirk. BTW, I hear tell of a very dangerous DOOM mission regarding Shatner and Lynch Castle, but at this point, it's only rumors... It didn't read as a 'let's blame society' flick for me at all. For me, it was more of an exercise in style and breaking the comicbook-to-movie mold. That being said, I don't wholeheartedly recommend this. I'm astonished it did as well as it did. Phoenix was good in this, but I too share a general disdain for him. I don't know why. Usually I find his work overrated. This was an exception for me. RE: Joker - King Bob - 02-11-2020 Well I am judging from clips, so not getting the big picture. And I mean no disrespect for Shatner. I probably should have compared Phoenix to Pacino at his loudest. RE: Joker - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 02-11-2020 I have *zero* desire to see this film RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 02-11-2020 So I'm the only DOOMer that's seen this? I feel so... alone. ![]() RE: Joker - Greg - 02-11-2020 Why so serious? It's in my Netflix queue. RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 02-12-2020 (02-11-2020, 08:21 PM)Greg Wrote: It's in my Netflix queue. I feel so validated... ...no wait...hold the phone. I have stuff in my Netflix queue that's been there for years. And I don't even have Netflix anymore. ![]() RE: Joker - King Bob - 02-13-2020 So I may be beating a dead horse here, but last night I had a thought about this: Isn't Phoenix way too old for this role? The Joker starts his life of crime in his mid-50s? Is it a retirement career? And I think you could also argue that his life of party clown and would-be stand up comic sounds more like a guy in his 20s. RE: Joker - Drunk Monk - 02-13-2020 This is no where near canon. Heck I don't even know what that means with the Joker anymore. But there's no falling in the toxic waste and getting the clown make-up scarified. It's not connected to Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad, or any previous Batman movies. It's a complete re-imagining of the character with a realism vibe. It's more like Taxi Driver than anything else. |
