Agreed about the entertainment value but differ on the advancing.  There was some development with what might happen to the baby, Sabrina's alliance with the other witch students and her relationship with the muggle (funny aside - the muggle used to be in this kid's show Austin and Ally and he was Tara's only celeb crush when she was little).  But really, does any xmas special advance the main story arc much?  I'm thinkin the Star Wars Xmas special mostly, but also the Shrek one, and maybe the Kung Fu Panda one if I don't have to think about that song again.  Dang.  Too late.

I did love the comment about not calling it xmas but yule or solstice.  I'm so down with that as a soldier of the War on xmas.  I kinda wish they went with the Krampus legend.  It was almost so, but not quite.  

I want the cat to talk.  That was the best part - the only part - of the original series.
