A remake project film was recently announced casting Ronda Rousey in the lead role, so I thought I'd revisit it. I remember being amused by it but not as fond of it as many others as it now has somewhat of a cult status. I remember thinking that Swayze couldn't kick to save his live, and that it was just a tad to heavy on his homoerotic beefcake (put on shirt on goddammit!). And of course, his Tai Chi sucked. Well, I like it a lot better now. It's such a postcard from the '80s. I like real explosions and there's a couple of good ones here. Swayze is great in the role, as is Sam Elliot and good ol' Ben Gazzera. I can forgive the Tai Chi now as it was such an early appearance in film. And the Jeff Healy band rocks.
I was re-imagining it with Ronda as Dalton. Of course, all of the gratuitous topless scenes, so pervasive in 80s B films and virtually absent now (it's all moved to VOD) would have to go, which would significantly detract from the original. Much of the plot hinges on Dalton's romance with Doc. Would Ronda be the only woman in a rough redneck world of men? Or could there be gender reversal with all the bouncers and villains being women? That would probably be too weird so most likely the former. Would they keep it at the Double Deuce? I could see it being set at an EDM club (even though those are seldom violent) because a dubstep soundtrack would be awesome. Swap Healy for Skrillex. Elliot's character should be female, like Pam Grier or some action queen of her stature. And Gazzera, well, the villain would have to be a villainess if the love triangle story arc was preserved - or there could be a lesbian angle. The most important thing is that Ronda would have to learn Tai Chi, and I'm just the person to teach it to her.

Should I send her the videos of you doing Tai Chi at KFTC Day to show her your mad skillz? Or would that be counter-productive.

Someone needs to erect road blocks every time Ronda heads for Hollywood.
She should stick with Iko Uwais and other martial arts-savvy company in overseas vehicles that genuinely use her unique talents.
In Hollywood, I fear they'll try to make her into a glamour queen who -- oh, by the way -- can fight.
Just my two cents worth.
As for Roadhouse, DM definitely deserves to have a big hand in the script (assuming he can keep it off Rousey's abundant thewage long enough).
P.S. Yes, thewage is a word, because I say so.

Ha. This is such a mullet fest. Swayze is really good in it though. He's what makes it work. That and Gazzera who seems to truly relish in his villainy.
It's cheesey - so painfully late 80s - but a cult classic.

Rewatched again in lieu of the Den assignment. Yeah, I’ll take it on. Why not?
I remembered it fairly well this time and the rewatch did frame my thinking on the coverage. I take back what I said about Swayze’s kicks in my initial review. He can move. Son of a dance instructor, and he did study Kung Fu, aikido & tkd, so I should give him cred.
That original Rousey version was canned. A new version is coming out for Amazon prime starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton. That doesn’t work for me at all.
Did you know there was a sequel to Road House with none of the original cast? It was about Dalton’s son.
Did you know that Robby Keene from Cobra Kai has the middle name Swayze because his alcoholic mom was a fangirl?
Did you know there was an off broadway musical starring Taimak from the Last Dragon in a blonde mullet wig?
I should endeavor to work those factoids into my coverage, yes?

Ha. I thought that was a psuedonym. He plays a seedy reprehensible character.
One of the points I'll make is that the music was overseen by producer/mogul Jimmy Iovine, which explains Healy's role.
