One of my co-workers, arguably the one I'm closest to because he's a fellow trekkie, has been the drummer for this band since 1994. They're coming to the Bottom of the Hill in SF, a venue that I don't think I've been to since I lived in SF. According to wiki, "The band's genre-bending sound has been defined as post-rock, post-hardcore, math rock, and indie rock." Honestly, I had not heard the term 'math rock' until I looked this up. I'd be negligent if I missed him. The band is on tour next week, coming up from LA then headed north, so my co-worker friend won't have time to visit.
The show is next Thursday, 12/4, and David has set me up with guest passes. Anyone care to join me?

Surprisingly, I'm actually going to a different show that night. TG and I are going to see Mdou Moctar.

lol. You two were the D00MBros I was thinking of for this.
Are you into math rock at all? I'm not sure I understand what it is, but I mentioned it to my iaido dojomates last week and two of them were like 'Yeah, math rock. I gotta friend that's into that.' Their combined age is way below mine.

Never did find a date for this show tonight. Prolly shouldn't have led with the math rock label.
Math rock includes King Crimson, Rush & Yes - it has to do with the time signatures not being 4/4, which would then include a lot of Indian music that I enjoy, and of course, the Grateful Dead (still trying to figure out what the time sig for Estimated Prophet is...3/4? 7/4?)
Season to Risk opens, followed by Sisters (emo post-hardcore post-punk) and Low Cross (doom metal math rock post-metal). Not sure how long I'll hang. Might just catch S2R and bail to come home. I have tomorrow off so it doesn't matter, but I'm feeling the weight of the drive already...

When I was taking lessons as a teen, Charles, my 2nd teacher was trying to get me to learn Scatterbrain by Jeff Beck which is in 9/8 and 12/8.

Spent the first set in the green room with the two other bands - so cramped it was like Tetris moving about.
Caught Sisters. Typical punk.
BotH is maybe just shy of 100 peeps. Loud (got my pro plugs in). Some dude from Berkeley shared a J with DM, which was just right: in fact, we’re on break so DM’s gonna check the smoking section…

Well that was amusing. Turns out my coworker is a talented drummer although he leans into his right hand cymbals heavily. Enjoyed their set, particularly the more soundscapey stuff towards the end.
Drove home to Bollywood stealth mode under that bright cold supermoon and there was a minimum of other drivers. Shared a tiny bit of nite Cotswold with Yuki and now I’m hoping to sleep but once again, I’m pretty wired. Maybe after a nitecap.

I would have to relearn in, but I had it down before, so...maybe?
