Well I have no cats, but the neighbor's evil cat once crapped right on the gate latch at our old house. I have no idea how he perched up there.

Cranefly, why don't you hire me? I was pretty good at FrameMaker once - I was actually a "Technical Document Publisher" at Intel. and then I'll train the Yeti. Plus I can write and edit; I have the (otherwise useless) MA in Art History to prove it.

We could all go work for Cranefly! I'm familiar with Flash, Photoshop, phpBB, Final Cut pro, and Doom3. I'd be an excellent telecommuter.

Since April I have been working my new job which manly consists of me sitting at home, scanning the web, watching movies, walking the dog, and drawing a paycheck. This process is occassionally punctuated by trips to visits clients, attend meetings, and/or receive training. This would all be great if the shock and awe of being laid off last year after an 18 year employment wasn't still so palpable. Even as I take time from my day-O-work to write this, a voice in the back of my head is saying, "there are going to start to question the need to keep you on the payroll". Oh well, another day in Paradise, any good movies open today?
And regarding the topic "Things that slid off the back of a truck", recently while driving down the Camarillo Grade (101 heading north from LA dropping from the Canejo Valley into Camarillo/Oxnard. Think a mini-Grapevine) a truck lost a full size black leather sofa at the bottom of the hill while everyone was traveling 65-80 MPH. Rather than tumbling or rolling, the sofa stayed perfectly upright and slid across all the lanes of the packed freeway. I was in the fast lane and watched the sofa pass right infront of me, coming to rest in the center divider. It missed all of the cars and resulted in no accidents. I am not superstisious, still I immediately bought a lottery ticket.

I counted up, and I'm now on my 10th boss in 18 years.

Got a call from the president of my company yesterday afternoon -- they're doing a little restructuring and my one-person department has been relocated back to where it was in 2006 -- Training is now part of Tech Support again, instead of Marketing. Never mind that almost all of my tasks are Development-related, I can't be part of Development because -- well there's no good because. The president likes me and he doesn't particularly like the people in Development and he thinks he's doing me a favor by keeping me away from them. Sigh. Probably doesn't make any difference except that Development has a bigger budget and gets nicer stuff. He blah-blah-blahed me to death about why he's doing it and why I'm reporting to my 10th boss in 18 years, but long story short, I'm still doing the same thing I've been doing for the same money and just having a different person responsible for writing my annual review and listening to me bitch about how everyone forgets I exist because I'm off-site.

One good thing is that the new boss was originally trained by me as she was climbing up the ranks (the only reason I don't have her job is because I refuse to move back to Chicago or give up telecommuting); and she's already agreed to give me a team of employees and order nifty new Adobe Captivate 3 software to do what I want to do next... something I've been begging for from my old boss for awhile now... then again that means I'll have to go back to Chicago to meet with my new team from time to time. Oh well, chances to see my niece.

Just weirdness.

Yup, it is the classic corporate "making up new problems to solve and justify our phoney-baloney managerial jobs". At least you are well-regarded and have a steady job; could be worse...!

Oh, My Liege, how are you with Islay whiskies...?

Haven't had the pleasure. Why don't you come south and bring a bottle with you?

Just about to pack everything up and head to Arizona -- teaching more workshops. Last one of the year, thank goodness. Anyway, checked the weather in Mesa. It's going to be in the mid to upper 90s. I double checked the calendar and yep, it's definitely October. Mid 90s. Does anyone else think this is just bad and evil and wrong?

Well, it'll be in the mid-70's here. They can have their 90's. Now it's time to go out and have a nice breakfast at a sidewalk cafe.

Gods, but it is tough to live here!

I thought I was done with work-related travel for the year. Apparently not. Apparently I'm going to Birmingham, Alabama the weekend before Thanksgiving.

My company owns a court reporting school (great way to grow your own customer base). The school get federal funding for something or other (probably something to do with the Americans with Disabilities Act or some other federal jobs program thing). Don't know the details but found out today that apparently there's some sort of percentage on that, where only a certain percentage of the school's operating expenses can fall under the federal funding and apparently they came up short. The school will go under unless Stenograph can come up with some sort of miracle plan to generate income that can be diverted to the school. What's my company's miracle? Why me, of course! After all Cindi's workshops are SO popular, that it doesn't matter that there's only two weeks notice or that they're going to hold the event on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Cindi's so wonderful that of course, people will drop everything they're doing to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

I'm going to be amazed if they get five people to show.

So now, instead of just a leisurely trip with one bag and no computer to my parents from November 22-30, I'm now flying to Birmingham on the 20th, from Birmingham to Tampa on the 23rd, then back to L.A. on December 1st and dragging all my equipment with me. So now I'm out of town for nearly two weeks instead of 8 days. Bleaaah. Good thing I've got a nice boyfriend who will take care of my critters.

Of course, I had to cancel the flights and very nice comfy seats I booked back in May and book new flights. Because it's last minute and flying around Thanksgiving, I've got middle seats on American and heaven knows what on Southwest-- blech. Traveling sucks enough when I'm "Premier" on United and getting the "special" treatment reserved for frequent travelers.

Grrrrrrr.
