Live Free or Die Hard
#1
Is that the lamest name for a movie ever? Maybe we should start a thread discussing that topic.

Amazingly, it was not the lamest movie ever. I went to this movie to see Kevin Smith in his role as the Warlock. ( Get this man out of my Command Center!) but alas, his role was small. However, the rest of the film was goofy fun enough to give this movie a good rating. It had a lot of great action set pieces and only one of them was completely silly, but the movie built towards it. Think Big Rig verses plane that doesn't exist except in computers.

Once again, it's a plot to steal a lot of money. Once again, the bad guys are Super Cool. (It was odd to see Tom Olyphant without his Deadwood mustache) And Once Again, Bruce Willis spends the movie covered in blood. Most his but some the other guys. But the movie had a few good twists. Justin Long (Mac/Pc ads, Galaxy Quest) was really funny playing the Ubernerd. Amazingly, his character has a little bit of an arc. Willis's Daughter Lucy is damn funny. I think she's going to star in the next Die Hard movie. And Willis has a great fight with Maggie Q. It's Action Action Action. Don't think too hard about the plot. It will only make your head hurt.

And the irony award goes to not me. I thought the man who played the head of the FBI cyber terrorism unit also was the head of the terrorists in True Lies. Damn, they look like brothers. But it's not true. But it should be and then this review would have had gravitas.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

So my cub had this drop off b-day party just one exit from Shoreline, so I dashed over to catch this. The timing was just right - I got in just as the previews started and had to dash out as soon as the credits began. I thought of leaving sooner. The reviews were saying this was back to the original spirit of Die Hard (the first one I did enjoy, but I didn't see any of the others that I can remember). It didn't work for me. All the absurd CGI effects and narrow escapes were so preposterous that I never felt Willis was ever in any jeopardy. And they weren't quite preposterous enough to be funny. I don't like Willis. I don't know why. He's been great in several movies I've enjoyed like Sixth Sense, Fifth Element, 12 monkeys....hmm maybe I only like the Willis movies with numbers in the title. Oh wait, there was Pulp Fiction. Anyway, I completely lost interest when *spoiler* Maggie Q gets offed. I think Maggie is the next Hong Kong film start with a lot of potential to break more in America. She was great in Naked Weapon. I was hoping for more from Cyril Raefaelli, a big parkour guy, but his character hadn't been developed sufficiently before *spoiler* he gets offed. It's good to see parkour still moving forward after Casino Royale. Kevin Smith's role was so minimal - very disappointing. I might have enojyed it more if Christopher Walken was the villain and Keanu was the ubernerd.

Saw it. Enjoyed it (though I was laughing out loud at the end with the Truck vs Imaginary Aircraft). The Parkour guy was really impressive. Maggie Q was [sorry, I had to pause to wipe the drool off of my keyboard] very attractive.

So, for a Summer action film, I was happy with it.

Dude, your are never going to be more than a quarter-full, moonwise. I, on the other cheek, will always be the Celestial Emperor: Round, white, cratered and inhumanly large.

Die Hard (1988)

Totally an Xmas movie.

It holds up remarkably well although I’ll argue that it’s all about Alan Rickman. He’s such a great villain. I don’t care about anyone else in this but am completely engrossed in every scene he’s in.

Nice to hear Al Leong (the ultimate henchman) get some lines. It’s just ‘Move! Move! Move!’ but that’s so more than usual.

It’s funny to watch this now in the wake of Brooklyn 99.

Seen on amazon prime (IMDb w/ads)

I finally gleaned this long-standing Maggie Miscue-munication and will add my two cents.

Just movies with naked in their titles.

I stand corrected. But you can understand my mistake because they’re both Wong Jing films.

Daniel Wu is also in Naked Weapon and he dated Maggie for a bit. He once shared a story about how he had to do a live scene with her after they broke up and got pissed off at the director because he stuck the scene in without his consent. He only discovered it when he heard them call for nipple tape for Maggie. It was one of those casual Dan Wu stories where I had to hold on to my jaw lest it crack the table from dropping like in a Chuck Jones cartoon.

Had to reread this whole thread to find out how we got to Naked Weapon. Still don't understand but I'm moving on.

Does it matter? We got to Maggie Q in nipple tape.

Actually if you just take the time and watch Naked Weapon, all will become clear…
