When dog treats say 'human grade' that means I can eat them too, right? Just curious.
Yuki has these night crazies like a cat. He gets all bitey, chewing everything he can put in his mouth, and runs around like a mad dog. He's also grown a bit and is getting physically stronger and more coordinated quickly. Our games of tug-o-war are getting serious already.
One of his nips caught me in the 2nd crease of my right hand pointer finger. His fang poked me like an acupuncture needle. Hurts every time I grab something or wash/disinfect my hands (which I'm obsessive about in these covid daze).
He likes to tuck into nooks to sleep. Right now, he's sleeping on the vacuum cleaner in the corner. Quirky dog, but I suppose they are all.

Yuki had his first vet visit. He did quite well. He was nervous of course but everyone at the vets squealed with delight at his ridiculous cuteness (gotta be the Pom factor) but maybe they do that for all new patients so their owners feel good about the place.
Now our dumb surfer neighbor is having a party. They’ve got firecrackers. Yuki was interested at first but now he’s come inside for a nap.

Yuki definitely gets the night crazies. I thought that was just a cat thing. Just before sunset, he dashes back and forth from the yard to the house, thrashing all of his chew toys, and nipping at any body part in range. It's like the floor is lava - I just sit up high and watch him until he either goes for some tug-of-war or tires himself out. It's like berzerker shep-pom for a good 15 mins. He's pretty fast, just not agile yet, and runs into things or face plants a lot.
Puppies are fun.

Goddammit. I messed up and failed to get a critical distemper shot at the vets. There were several things I was supposed to sort and that was a key one but it was so chaotic there. The SF shelter provides free shots on Sunday but Stacy has clients and the jetta isn't up to snuff yet, so maybe I'll have to borrow my mom's old camry and hope it makes it. Such a major fuck up on my part. I'm juggling way too much nowadays and just lost track again. Total merc in ret. Fuck.

Yuki hasn't been too freaked by the fireworks. He was curious and wanted to watch from the door step. Then there was a big flash over our bungalow and he retreated for a bit, but then he went back to observe some more. Stacy pulled him in thinking he was getting scared but I'm not so sure. He went to sleep however, more or less like he's been doing every night. Stacy is sleeping with him tonight (we're taking turns) and I haven't heard anything from them since we turned their lights out an hour ago or so. And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, continues...

We've discovered that there is a breed known as a German Pom. Yuki fits this description well.

Maeve and Dani are now 11 and 10. Yet, we still do our walks in the morning. Maeve is constantly on the leash because she can't be trusted. Dani stays pretty close but will wander away, coming back when I reach into my pocket for the chicken treats.
I usually let Maeve off the leash on the way back when I turn off Misty Ridge Rd onto Misty Ridge Ct. Since I own the only home on the Court and there is a slim to none chance there will be any traffic. Maeve usually plops down to take a little rest while Dani and I continue down the court the couple hundred yards to the house. At this point several of the house cats, usually Fainí and Finoula. Today the four kittens joined them as well. The sight of the cats usually gets Maeve moving again but some days she's content to sit out there for an hour or more.
Today as I passed the small swale next to the road, I heard a rustle and I noticed the cats were looking off into the tall grass. Dani promptly left my side to investigate. Maeve popped and joined her.
Suddenly there was grunting and barking and little black feral pigs were running in every direction. The dogs were in hot pursuit. Several pigs ran towards the house. A bunch rand deeper up the creek bank. Several went into the swale. Maeve and Dani followed the ones into the swale and then back out into the road. The chorus of barking rang throughout the neighborhood.
My initial holy fuck look at all those pigs panic settled into bemusement as the girls race up the road after their quarry. They must have found the slow feral pig, because the girls kept chasing this pig everywhere. They went into the yard of the unsold house on the corner. Then across the street into the cow pasture, through the barbed wire, I might add.
I had to follow them in case the dogs went out to the main road. But the feral pig double back and headed towards the swale (swale is just a dry creek bed that only gets wet if there is a lot of rain) The dogs cut off the pig and pushed it back towards the empty house. I caught up to the menage a trois of chasing. The pig kept turning so fast that old Maeve had her legs knocked out from underneath her and she plopped down into the grass.
It was quite the tableau with the feral pig nosing at Maeve to see what happened and Dani standing by Maeve's head. That was the only point I was really worried. I thought the pig might bite Maeve, but the pig was only interested in charging at the dogs to give him/her some distance to get away.
The pig really needed to be faster because the girls were on his/her heels for the entire chase. Occasionally, the pig would turn around to charge at the girls. The girls would stop and retreat not knowing quite what to do.
Eventually, I had enough. I got close enough to leash Maeve and took her back towards to the house. She panted up a storm, with her tongue hanging about a foot out of her mouth. She was so exhausted she had to stop and lie down on the way home. Thinking that she was done, I took off Maeve's leash and went to go get Dani who still pursued the pig.
The chase had gone back down Misty Ridge Rd and into our new neighbor's yard, The Fahey's. Fortunately, they still haven't moved otherwise I think the barking might have woken them.
Dani lost the pig in their yard. She kept looking around but couldn't find it. But she in no way wanted to give up the chase.
Maeve had followed me because she was till game for the chase. I decided I would take her back to the house for real this time and lock her up and then go get Dani.
After much chicken treats and pulling on leashes, I got the two exhausted dogs back to the house. They promptly lay down in the hall and haven't moved in the last two hours.

I took Yuki on 3 short walks today but he wouldn't have it. Twas too hot for the fuzz ball. He would only go as far as the next shady spot, even when enticed by treats. He's very slowly expanding the territory he feels comfortable with and at this point, it's about 3 houses in either direction, and only on the same side of the street.
No feral pigs but the raccoons are back.
We paid for my dearth of walkies at twilight when his night crazies hit. He was all bitey fangs and we had to retreat to the high ground. Imagine a toothy tasmanian tribble, running about biting everything. This is our twilight time now. The floor wasn't lava. It was a needle-fanged german pom. And he's growing so soon, he'll be able to reach our high ground (the futon and sofa - he can already get to us on the other chairs). What the heck have we let into our home?
This being said, when he's not Fangs McBitey, he can be very affectionate, resting his head on us in a cuddly fashion.

We were having a great game of fetch with one of Yukio's toys while Stacy was practicing piano. And then Yuki tore one of my fav flannel shirts and piddled on the carpet.
Turns out he has a really shrill bark.
We are both realizing that everyone was right when they said we couldn't have handled a larger puppy dog.

Took Yukio for a long walk up at Pogonip. Made it just past the labyrinth - over a mile round trip. We hoped that would wear him out but his night crazies were as bad as ever. He's getting bigger so fast.

Ha! You tried to wear out a puppy? That's funny. But walks are the best remedy. Dog parks are another good remedy or we're. The dogs were always knackered after playing with the other dogs. I'm guessing the dog parks are closed at this point.

At two months, puppYuki is officially a pubescent pup. He’s starting to hump stuff.
Growing so fast.
He’s still biting the crap out of us and ninja piddling, but he’s pooping outside so we’re grateful of that. Started puppy class and are applying the lessons. Progress is slow.

It's easy to socially distance for puppy class. The only real shift is they don't have puppy playtime - at least not officially. The dog training facility is huge - several football fields worth of real estate on Soquel, kind of near the road to Nisene Marks. They have one of those full on obstacle courses that's massive, but we just are in the paddock, which is a large fenced off field.
Yuki is outsmarting a lot of the exercises. There's this name training one where you toss a treat away to get the pup to go get it, and then call it by name and reward it when it turns around. Yuki grabs the treat and turns around immediately before I can call him, knowing he'll get a second treat. He also knows that the teacher always has treats so he's super friendly with him.
