So much FOMO, like a physical pain.

Locked & loaded. My pack isn’t too heavy but I’ve got a full bear fan and no water yet.

I was texting with our nooB, a veteran biker but never backpacked. He told me his head fan was already full just with his snacks. Such a nooB mistake (my can contains my snacks, meds, toiletries, and 5 dinners for 4). Reminds me of someone…

Our trail looks hot in the valley, muddy on the way up, and then snow. Snow? Srsly? When am I taking a vacation where I can just sit on my ass and drink cocktails?

A lot to be said for sitting upon one’s arse and sipping booze. That’s where I’ll be in 10 days.

Carry on with your snow and bears.

Can’t argue with that.

I’m flashing back to my ‘this is my fucking vacation’ moment last year in Yose. http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...9#pid58689

This year will be better. Leaving in a few hours. Hope to get one sleep cycle in beforehand.

Um, I wonder if we will hear stories about the Pika Fire when the kids return. This is part of the trail they were supposed to hike but they might have traversed the area before the trails closed.

Does that mean that they are trapped behind a lethal curtain of flames?

We embarked around 4am on Sunday. Stacy had been training herself all week, getting up earlier and earlier - Tara, Bri & Alex were crashing in the living room. Bottles & Yuki were lined up with a succession of dog caretakers because our original one failed and we had to scramble to replace him with our neighbor, some dog park friends, and some of Stacy’s coworkers. But we made good time, stopping in Mariposa for breakfast at Happy Burger, which we totally recommend and get it it to the park around 9 or 10z

Despite Greg’s ominous warnings about filled parking, we had reservations which allowed us to sail past the one day tourists and offload near the backpackers campground, then secure a parking spot nearby where there were plenty of options. The 20’s (T, B & A) set out to explore curry village whilst Stacy & I secured our wilderness pass and got trail conditions. The Pika fire was caused by a lightning strike and near North Dome, where we had planned to go in one option, but could route around. The ranger (appropriately named Forrest) assured us that the snow wasn’t too high, the creek was passable (8’ wide 2’ deep with some logs and not surging, and the fire was contained but there would be fire crews along our route. Stacy decided to visit her fav Ansel gallery whilst I went to meet Marcus, a newbie to our squad, at Yart (he was coming from Merced). Marcus is from Rock Med & JAH Med, a good friend.

When we split, the shuttle pulled up, and I hopped on thinking I’d save myself a bit of walking. That was dumb because it was packed and had I remembered the route went all the way to the front of the park before circling back to Curry. So annoying.

But I made in in time. Stacy was already there having strolled over and was highly amused at my first misstep. Marcus arrived on time and we rejoined the others at camp. It was a pleasant night.  Backpackers are respectful because they generally get up at first light to hit the trail whilst it’s still cool.

The major bummer was that my relatively new thermarest sleeping pad sprung a leak. It gave some shelter from the cold ground, but no cushion so I could feel my bones against the earth. Rugged. Cold ground was my bed last night, and rock was my pillow too…

We were the last to leave backpackers camp. The 20s were slow starters, much to Stacy’s frustration, who was now hard wired to get up super early.

The first shock was a tiny frog had crawled in my pack. It’s was less that an inch but it startled the hell out of me. In retrospect, it was a warning of my impending doom. Tell me why I don’t like Mondays…

We started past mirror lake to take the snow creek trail out of the valley. This trail was marked as rigorous - 3.7 miles straight up. It was there, one the first real day, when I faced my maker…

Happy Burger is the best. We often frequent there. I hope you got the senior discount.
