Well it’s all about the multiverse now, ain’t it?
As a stalwart DCEU and Batman fan, I’m gonna say meh. And youse guys liked it? What weird multiverse are we in now? Should I look for Bruce (Campbell) to get some pizza snacks?
Hear me out.
This is truly the dark knight because it’s all so damn dark. I had to max my brightness setting and it was still too damn dark. There was some decent action choreo - or at least it seemed so if they’d turned the lights up a little more.
It’s also too damn long. I’m fine with 3 hour movies. I watch Bollywood. But if you’re going to do that, give us a damn intermission. It’s a change to pee and to get more snacks at concessions - everybody wins. I did like the prevailing storyline but it was too drawn out. A good hours worth of superfluous mood setting could have been snipped.
Patterson was ok as the goth Bruce, although the notion rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, sure, it’s Gotham, and I did like how goth Gotham was, but I never saw Batman as goth. Kravitz was terrible as cat woman. Ok sure, she’s still just Selina but I need my catwoman to be more feline, plus she couldn’t sell a kick at all. I liked the riddler and penguin - kudos to Dano & Ferrell (who I didn’t even recognize). Serkis was the worst Alfred ever. Alfred needs to be more sophisticated.
I did like its style and myth tweaking. I’m glad we didn’t have to see the death of Bruce’s parents and we just got on with it. There were plot gaps I found annoying, like just shoot Batman in the mouth - it’s the only bit of him you can see because the rest is too damn dark. I liked the batsuit and bat toys. The batcave was good too.
The soundtrack was too repetitive, especially at nearly 3 hours of it. And I just didn’t care for the Batman theme they used. Bring back. NanananaNanananaNanananaNanananaNanananaNanananaNanananaNanananaBatman!
That being said, I’m down for a sequel to this version.
D00M recommended, just for argument’s sake.
