I decided to take up our hat chat here because it was muddling discussion of a perfectly good sword fightin flick - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=6124
I've copied all the discussion because I'm OCD that way. Okay, actually it's because my memory needs to be jogged by the previous posts. But y'all knew that.
I dunno, man. With the recent increase in azn attacks, I'm figuring I better lay low when it comes to the evil tong villain thing. Wouldn't want to bloody my everyday carry, as much as it would please our dearly departed LB.
Wait...Yetis get cold head? That's...well, there's a lot of places we could go with that.
On those times I shaved my head, I can totally sympathize. Those times are when I started collecting hats. I learned quickly that if I'm going to shave, I should do it in spring. I'm getting shaggy again, so I've been pondering shaving again, but then I'd miss the excuse to visit Ms. Bailey for a trim. Maybe after I get my vax. It's not like anyone sees me now and I can tie my locks back for ZOOM meetings.
I could totally see how baseball caps wouldn't work for you too, KB.
I wish top hats would make a comeback. They're a pain in the ass to carry about, but I look good in them. At least I think I do and that's all that counts.

Umbrella hats, lampshade hats, hats ridiculously small (to a westerner's eye) and hats with wing-like flourishes or scroll-like projections. You name it, and this movie has it -- in terms of hats. And they all signify important stuff about allegiance and rank and who knows what else. Not that I know any of it. So for me it's like a Monty Python skit about funny walks -- only this uses hats.

I have maybe two-dozen-plus hats, all baseball cap style, with various logos cool logos on them, artifacts from concerts, comic-cons, and my wayward lifestyle. I keep thinking I should wear hats more often because I look so much younger if I hide my receding hairline.
I have a killer top hat. If that hat could talk, I'd have to slit its throat and sink it off the pier.
I used to have a black hybrid sombrero cowboy hat but Tara stole it from me. I got that on an SJSU fencing trip to So Cal because it reminded me of the man with no name.
I have a few toques, including a fav from Dublin's Teeling's distillery, and weird one that has a brim and earflaps, plus a built in pull down ninja mask.
Surprisingly I do not own a rasta tam.
Nor do I have a pith helmet. Scapino owned that at a Dead show and I cannot ever see me going there. The memory of the Grate-Scapino-tripper-pith-helmet swipe makes me smile even now. Perhaps Greg & KB remember? I'll never forget.
One of my Kung Fu uncles collects Ming dynasty hats. He also has the most amazing collection of Chinese weapons I've ever seen, plus a few signed Dali prints. And a cherry red Ferrari. He's cooler than me.

It looks weird because they're oversized to fit over the yarmulke, but a well-fitting one is a good look. Paul Simenon of The Clash used to wear one sometimes. A straw boater is a great hat too, but I think a bit theatrical. I worry about getting a sunburn on my balding head - I don't want to be one of those old men where the top of their head looks sort of like a ham - so I usually wear a straw fedora when I'm out walking. In colder weather I wear a knit cap.
They had so many more hat shapes in the 19th century. Ours is a sorry time by comparison.
DM - surely there are some Chinese traditional hats for you? You've probably got connections who could help.

I think I wear enough Chinese stuff already. Too much. That's what I mean by 'evil tong villain.'

I wear knit caps and baseball caps. My Sunday Wandering Hat is some sort of outdoors full-brimmed hat. I call it my Old Man hat. Like Dr. Bob says I gotta keep the sun off my noggin. I have also had enough skin-things burned off my face by my doc that I have to keep the sun off my mug.
Also, my head gets cold.
