flags of our Fathers

Just so you know, war is bad.

After watching this film, it's easy to see why it didn't make much at the Box office. I don't think people like it when their cherished beliefs are torn apart like so much tissue. And, the the movie states the government will lie to us to further it's own ends.

It's a beautifully done film. It owes a lot to Saving Ryan's Privates for it's battle scenes but nothing near as graphic. But how many shots of men holding in their intestines do you really need?

All in all a very politically incorrect little film from Clint Eastwood. I can't wait to see Letters from Iwo Jima
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

I watched Flags of our Fathers last night and Letters from Iwo Jima tonight. Flags was about the famous raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and how it was actually a "redo" and how that affected the soldiers involved. Especially the "Bond" tour that they are sent on to raise money for the war effort. It's told through flashbacks from various character's points of view. I thought it was a bit uninteresting.

Letters from Iwo Jima tells the story of the Japanese soldiers that fought to defend Iwo Jima. The two movies are connected, scenes from one are revisited, or explained in the other, but one isn't a sequel to the other, and you don't need to see both. I enjoyed Letters. It could be because it was almost entirely in Japanese with subtitles it was more compelling. It was very touching in several places. I've seen several films directed by Clint. Sudden Impact, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Flags. I have to say that this is one that I recommend.
