Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
#1
A lot of people complain about how their Facebook feed is full of negative politics and hate. And sure, there’s more of that than ever now but what they fail to understand is that fb feeds are bot driven and bots can be trained. Ig trained my bots with judicious likes. My fb feed is dominated by ancient cold arms and vintage hawties. I’m ok with that.

I started liked random pics of vintage hawties (it probably started with Stevie or Lynda Carter) and the bots picked up on that so they provide me with a constant stream - Bond girls, Elizabeth Montgomery, Yvonne Craig, Diana Rigg, Julie Newmar… the bots think I’m into Deborah Harry more than I am but oh well. Then there’s Marilyn and Jane. They pop up a lot. Criterion is an odd collection and this was recommended. Hadn’t seen it in years so I went for it.

It’s a dated story. Marilyn is a cliche dumb blonde gold digger and Jane is a brunette hussy. Both are on a boat trip to Paris on what appears to be the Queen Mary where there’s a diamond moguthe U.S. Olympic team, and a private dick stalking Marilyn. The musical numbers are overdone and the humor ranges from tacky to sexy (but maybe I read too much into some of the innuendo).

But man. Marilyn and Jane embody 50s era bombshells. Men’s eyes pop out of their heads like wolves in Looney Tunes whenever they walk by. So objectified. When Marilyn kisses her fiancée, he goes into a trance and a goofy bell rings. But can you blame him? When Jane dances among the tight swimsuit clad olympians, it’s such a gay revelry. Marilyn‘s iconic Diamonds are a girl’s best friend is a show stopper. It’s all about them. Everything else in the film falls to the wayside with Marilyn and Jane in the spotlight.

Marilyn’s expressive affectations are so quirky but strangely alluring and watchable. There’s just something about the way she expresses herself, that dumb blonde schtick, that makes her vulnerable yet powerful. And Jane’s down-to-earth pragmatism is the perfect counterpoint. She’s sexy smart and larger than life. Ultimately I prefer Jane here despite the film’s title, but Marilyn is spellbinding in her iconic way.

Ultimately I couldn’t hang with the plot at all. The romances and the ending just didn’t work for me. But an hour and a half of Marilyn and Jane being glamorous was entertaining enough to keep watching.

Not particularly D00M recommended.

Some like it Hot is still my go to for Marilyn.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

It's the crossdressing that you like, isn't it? You'd enjoy Jane's Olympian musical number for sure.

My go to Marilyn is The Seven Year Itch.

Well, yeah.

To be honest, I've never been a big Monroe fan.

Me neither. I mean, I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating lavosh cracker bread. I respect her iconic status but I find her affectations very strange. It never quite worked for me, but I get it. And I'm not adversed to the fb bots sharing more pix of her. She was very photogenic.
