Inventing Anna (2022)
#1
Short series about the pretend heiress Anna Delvey who supposedly was trying to start an arts foundation, and wrote a bunch of bad checks and skipped out on a bunch of hotel bills. Not really worth watching - a documentary would have been better. Some of the acting was ridiculous. I just don't understand all the hype around Shonda Rimes. It got especially stupid toward the end. They leaned hard toward the idea that society warped her and rejected the idea that she's just a bad person. (Is that some kind of woke take on it?) It didn't work for me.

A couple of the real people (notably the writer who is the main character) were producers on this, which I thought was a bit weird.

I say wait for a documentary and don't waste your time.

Thank you. I was thinking of watching this because of the buzz. This and Tinder Swindler.

Tinder Swindler was better. Better made, better paced, and shorter. And a documentary. I forgot to post a review.

Aw man. I read this too late. We got 2.5 eps deep. I feel asleep a few times. Stacy claims I snored a lot but I think she was exaggerating (in all fairness, one snore was so loud it woke me up and why does that even happen?)

The acting was odd - everyone seemed to be over enunciating. It didn’t bother me too much at the time but now that you’ve mentioned it, it was annoying. I was amused at the opulence on how the rich live and some of it struck me as funny satire, particularly the TED talk.

It didn’t strike me as bad as you say, but I’m not even a third in, and napped through chunks which improved my experience.

So you watched the whole thing, KB? It’s 9 eps each an hour plus.

It's better in the early eps. I wasn't that keen on seeing it, but Christina's client recommended it so she wanted to watch it. It wasn't bad enough to stop, and I couldn't remember any of the real story so I wanted to see how it went.

And as it went on, the weird Russian accent annoyed me more and more. Apparently that's how she really talks, but it got on my nerves.

I keep wanting her accent to be fake, for her to break out in her real Jersey accent of something.

Not sure if I’ll continue. Stacy will likely watch more whilst I’m at my mom’s tonight. She’s not that into it but it’s something to watch. Maybe I tune in again if she’s still watching it tomorrow. I am amused by Chase and the scriberia crew.

Did Christina like it?

Christina sort of liked it, but was ultimately a little disappointed. Plus she kept falling asleep so she missed some of it. She said she got tired of seeing the writer standing there with her mouth open - her go to expression of shock or disbelief.

We watched another ep and a half so now we’re at e5.

I fell asleep again.

After my snore snort, Stacy said ‘What’s wrong? Not enough fight scenes for you?’ To which I replied ‘no fight scenes. Hmphf.’ And went back to my nap.

It’s getting repetitive and we may just skip to the end.

I've been sitting on this comment because I don't want to offend LCF but the reporter character Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky) reminds me faintly of LCF if LCF was a dogged pregnant reporter. I'm not sure why exactly, something in her expressions. Not that I think LCF overacts or over enunciates or even looks like Kent or induces sleepiness in me. Far be it from me to say that about the D00MJeopardyChamp. Hopefully LCF will take this in a flattering way.

It's not quite to the magnitude that I'm adding LCF/Kent to D00M cameos http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...hp?tid=209. Not unless someone else agrees.

I remind a lot of people of a lot of people. I've gotten Sally Field, Kelly Clarkson, and now Anna Chlumsky (whom I have never seen in anything, but remember from her child acting days.) Didn't know she was still acting.

Neither of those others remind me of you and I didn’t know Anna previously. We got to ep 8 where the pregnant Kent goes into labor at the most critical moment. Whenever there’s a pregnant woman it is always so - such a hackneyed writing device.

I didn’t watch the eps in between where I left off and 8. I took a shower and made myself some ramen. I only watched some of 8.

Saw a pic of the real Anna and the resemblance to the actress is uncanny. In fact I’m thinking some of the IG shots are the real Anna.

We’ll probably finish this tomorrow.

Finished. It was okay. I would’ve liked it less if I fully engaged it. The end kinda gassed out. I suppose I agree with KB’s initial appraisal although not quite as negative. I think I liked it better but didn’t watch as much of it.

I think my reviews may sound more negative then I intend, or I post while I'm still annoyed by the endings.

Fair.

I have a somewhat opposite issue. Once I went pro, my reviews leaned towards being more positive and supportive. Early on I decided that I didn’t want to be one of those snarky critics and with almost all of my paid reviews being about martial arts (I’ve only done a few non-martial arts reviews since I started freelancing for Den) I’ve always striven to support the wulin.

Here I’m still more positive as a counterpoint to Greg. Also after my mq6 years, and my obsession with martial arts cinema, I have a soft spot for B grade entertainment.
