Filmage: the Story of the Descendents/All
#1
The Milo artwork is iconic and to some extent, the All artwork is too, but I didn’t know much about either band, didn’t listen to them at all. This is a pretty well done chronology of the lineup changes over the years, the drummer doing double-duty in Black Flag, the reformation as “ALL” with theme same members, and not getting the audience reception when the only difference was the singer.

The shocking story is near the end where the drummer, Bill, starts to check out. He gains a ton of weight and ends up in the ER with a pulmonary embolism. He survives that, but is still lethargic so his doctor (a big Black Flag/Descendants fan) has an MRI done and they find a tennis ball-sized tumor in the top of his head, pushing against his frontal lobes. He can’t do surgery because he’s still recovering from the blood clot and is on blood thinners. 5 months later, they take it out and as soon as the anesthesia wears off, he feels like his old self again.

Now their back on the road as The Descendants, playing shows to pay his bills.

Lots of big names are interviewed: that Grohl guy, Mike Watt, tons of bands from the 90’s: NOFX, Blink 182

Recommended if you are into that sort of thing…
