(Seen on Criterion)
23-year-old Gypsy Vale (a big Stevie Nicks fan and imitator) and her best friend Clive (a virgin gay goth who likes making costumes for Gypsy) both feel alienated in small-town Ohio. When they hear about the upcoming Night of a Thousand Stevies lookalike contest, they head for New York to compete and find fame and fortune.
En route, they encounter all kinds of adversity. Eventually they do reach New York, and stuff happens.
Sorry, I don't have much enthusiasm for this. Though sounding like a great concept, it was too familiar in all its parts, filmed too plainly, and the actors didn't come to life for me. All in all, it seemed underpowered, especially the climactic event at the end in New York.
The highlight is their encounter with a jaded lounge singer played by Karen Black (that eternal trainwreck of my dreams). It's more than a cameo (15-20 minutes?) and ratchets things up considerably. But ultimately this spins out of control like Stevie Nicks on a broken yoyo string.
Which reminds me. The end credits include a section for Twirling Stevies.
Great concept, done poorly.
