Bandits vs. Samurai Squad (1978) by Hideo Gosha
#1
Tatsuya Nakadai (of The Human Condition) stars as a retiring samurai warrior who finds himself repeatedly put upon to do favors for his former master -- to the detriment of his family.  Finally he's had enough and comes out of retirement to lead "bandits" in an uprising, culminating in the breach of his former master's castle, not only to rob gold, but to settle a more personal and surprising affront in the distant past.

Quite complex and long, with lots of little surprises.  Requires some patience at 2 hr 43 min, but, hey, it's Tatsuya Nakadai.  If he can suffer through all of The Human Condition, you can damn well sit yourself down through this.
