"Dr. Money and the Boy with No Penis

This is a tragic documentary about Canadian Bruce Reimer, whose penis was burnt off during circumcision. Sexologist Dr John Money, who believed gender could be created by nurture, not nature, convinced Bruce's family he could be raised as a girl, so Bruce was castrated at 18 months and called Brenda.

After learning his real gender at age 13, Brenda took male hormones and changed his name to David. He later married a woman and was compensated for the botched circumcision but eventually committed suicide. A case of science denying humanity in the pursuit of success."

I really want to see this!

I saw a long piece (2 hours?) about the boy with no penis on TV several years ago. I believe Stone Philips did it. There'd be a bit of the story, then a commercial. Then they'd have to recap the part of the story covered so far -- I guess in case someone just tuned in -- then add a bit more. This went on and on, making it painful enough to watch just because of this insanely repetitive style.

I no longer watch Stone Philips.

But that documentary was even more painful for the subject matter. I don't know what to say. It was hypnotic and very unpleasant, because the kid seemed so nice and pleasant, and he was broadsided by medical incompetance not once, but multiple times. Lady Cranefly and I tuned in by chance soon after the start, and we watched it to the bitter end. The guy was still alive at the time, had married, and seemed to be making adjustments. Maybe a year later I heard he had killed himself.

I'm not certain I'd recommend it; it certainly isn't escapist fare. And I'm not certain which version of the story you're referring to.

Although if it's the one out on DVD, you should buy it immediately for the cover, which is spectacular.

Okay, so it's not out on DVD. As far as I know...

What a great idea to avoid medical malpractice! Look, we burnt off the kids junk but why don't we just raise him as girl? He'll never know. Until the hormones run riot in his body.

Socialized medicine rules.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
