Barton Fink (1991) by Joel and Ethan Coen

Another movie on the 366weirdmovies.com list. While it has some oddball moments, it lacks any likable characters, and perhaps its message (that to write about the common man you must listen to the common man) is a bit too strident. Okay, that’s not the only message (if it pays well, the job's in hell, etc.). But I’ll say it again: writers aren’t the most interesting people in the world. They are best read and not heard, or studied, or made the subject of a movie.

There’s exceptions, of course. Some rather striking ones at that. But to my mind this is not one of them.

I had a similar issue with Birdman. When art talks about its own process, it is so self-serving. French movies do that a lot, chat about the grand meaning of art in some B&W scene over espresso and cigarettes at a street cafe.

That being said, I did enjoy BF because I thought it captured writer's block well with its mood.
