Never saw this one before. First off, the word Amazon has been poorly adopted by Chinese translators (case and point Legendary Amazons <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2447">viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2447</a><!-- l -->). When I hear Amazon, I think Lynda Carter. This isn't that sort of clan. It's an underground clan of wimmin fighters that wear red shoes. There's a villain who uses embroidery to blind opponents, so there's a lot of blind upset characters looking for revenge. Based on some wuxia tale, this moves just like that, with several twisty Mcguffins. It's kind of like a superhero flick without CGI (if you can still imagine that). The wuxia world has a lot of outrageous costumes and crazy fight scenes just like a superhero movie. There are way too many characters and it's sort of a mystery, but I got lost in who was who about half way through and just let it all wash over me. The Kung Fu is mediocre. One of the finale fights is in the dark - really in the dark - because one of the blind guys pulls a move from Zatoichi's playbook, so it's just a lot of clanging, jumping whooshes and grunts with a mostly black screen. There are some decent swordfights, including a challenge match from the Amazons where the hero must survive 100 sword blows, and succeeds in pantsing all but the leader amazon.
Greg, you would enjoy the sets. The Shaw Brothers' Lot built some crazy period buildings, whole streets and palaces which they redressed and reused constantly. The furniture is really nice and there's always spectacular wood carvings adorning the palatial decor. It's really magnificent considering the time period and the nature of these films.
