Hmmm, I would have thought DM would be ahead of me on this one. But after seeing the movie, I am thinking he sensed something about this one I did not.
It is not good. It is a poorly constructed gooey mess. I saw all the interviews where Jason Segal talked about his love and adoration for the Muppets and how he thought he was the one to revive the Franchise. I would like to now state categorically that I do not like Jason Segal as an actor and this is the movie that pushed over the line. Put him in the queue with Micheal Cerra and Seth Rogen. I don't need to see these people in movies anymore.
Basically, Segal's brother is a Muppet who loves Muppets but doesn't realize he is a Muppet. When Jason, the Muppet Brother and his SO Amy adams go on a road trip to Los Angeles, they find out that the Muppet Studios is about to be close forever because of bad contracts and not nice people. So, the threesome has to gather up the Muppets and put on a show and to save the studios. Yee ha.
There are a few fourth wall breaking jokes that are funny. But it is mostly unfunny. I want my Muppets to be a bit more quietly subversive than they were in this movie. They were really shooting for a G I guess. Jason Segal was wearying in his cloying niceness. And all the new songs were bad. Too short. Not clever. Feh.
So, yeah, go rent this.
