Looks like the pirates win this round.
Quote:It’s not that the phrase “Asian Steampunk” is intrinsically flawed. It’s just that the range of concepts displayed in “Asian Steampunk,” whether fiction, gaming, or costumes, are so so... limited. You’d never catch “Western Steampunk” limiting itself to cowboys, hard-boiled detectives, and British bobbies. Why then limit yourself to samurai, ninja, and geisha? There was so much more to the cultures and peoples of east Asia than that. http://www.tor.com/blogs/2011/10/the-pro...steampunkq

I actually submitted a story to the "Shanghai Steam" Asian Steampunk anthology. Now, oddly, I'm hoping it gets rejected.
As it turns out, in the last few weeks I've written two more Asian Steampunk stories, and the three of them all tie together. They would work much better appearing one after another in a magazine. Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine might be a good candidate. Not that I'm saying the editor would buy all of them, or even any. But I see it as a possibility, and the pay is double what the Asian Steampunk anthology would pay. So, yes, for once I'm hoping for a rejection. I'll know one way or the other by the end of February. Wish me unluck. --cranefly

Are there more examples of the genre that you could point me towards?

There's quite a bit of Victorian steampunk out there. I recently tried reading Paul Di Filippo's The Steampunk Trilogy. He's actually an impressive writer and he has a great sense of humor. But for some reason I only got through 1.5 of the 3 novelettes. Wikipedia has a nice list of steampunk:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_steampunk_works But if you're talking Asian steampunk, it gets trickier. You can find a lot of art, especially at deviantart.com. Just google (image search) "Asian Steampunk". As for Asian steampunk literature, I really thought there was a fair amount of it out there until you asked the question. I avoided looking for it while writing my three stories, because I wanted to tap into my hopefully unique background rather than risk becoming derivative. But now that I'm looking, I'm not finding much at all. I asked Lady Cranefly about it, and she said nope, there isn't much Asian steampunk to date. What I'm thinking of doing is uploading my three stories to a private folder on my website, then providing links to them here, if you're interested. The three stories fall under the umbrella title, "Tales of Purple Cloud Pagoda." The stories themselves are "Fishing Excursion along the Lower Yangtze," "Teapot Rebellion" and "Last Crane to Yangzhou."

I don't use "the" as a verb in any of the above three stories, by the way.
But I am currently working on a story that does.

ANd I bet you the the hell out of it, too!
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

My story, "Fishing Excursion along the Lower Yangtze," just got rejected by the editors at Shanghai Steam. I will admit that this hurts a bit, but at the same time it opens the door for me to fine-tune the three stories and present them to a bigger market.
It's a lot like getting drunk at the local tavern and hitting on the aging whore at the end of the bar, only to have her slap you, which stings a bit because you're being rejected, but at the same time her tic looks an awful lot like a wink, giving you hope.

There's a major Asian Steampunk in the works. The follow-up Nickelodeon series to Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a steampunk world. It's called The Legend of Korra. The original animated series is fantastic (M. Night's live-action version sucks ass). Sifu Kisu, who did the mo-cap for the fights, is a BSL cousin. He demo'ed chain whip at Wing Lam's 30th. . Coincidentally, I just IMed Kisu about it. Korra drops sometime this summer probably

I came across this new anthology and thought of ya'all. http://intothefarwest.com/store/
It's a mix of wuxia, the american west, and a little bit of steampunk or so says the blurb.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

This is part 1 of a flagship trilogy coming from the Huayi Bro and announced at Cannes last year.
