Scapino and I and our better halves will be attending a showing this weekend at his super-deluxe movie palace out in Westlake.
I'm torn about liking this film. I always root for a good film to blow me away, but Cameron is such a dick and very anti-union so I wouldn't mind seeing it flop as well. I know I shouldn't confuse the artist with the art, but did I mention he's a dick? We shall see. I think I might be looking forward more to Sherlock Holmes.

I suppose every artist has one of those days when they lay a half-billion-dollar turd.

I thought being a dick was the norm in your business.

All kind of 3-D. The question is which version of 3-D is the best (and what substances would be best to accompany the experience).
Come on now. 3-D Uhura 2009 turned blue and lanky? I'm so in.

Took my son to see it at the AMC Mercado in 3-D (Not IMAX 3-D, that sold out yesterday). This is the first 3-D movie I've seen where the 3-D wasn't a distraction. The CGI was spectacular. The story was ok, even if it cribbed off of Dances with Wolves and Ferngully. Like Titanic, there's some clichés in there, and some of the message is a little heavy handed, but in general, I would say that it's a pretty successful movie from end to end. It definitely needs to be seen on the big screen and for the first time, I'd recommend the 3-D. When the newness wears off, I'll try and go to an IMAX screening.
A big "boo" goes out to the Mercado for turning off the movie about 5 seconds into the credits. I guess they really wanted us to clear out of the theater...

I concur. I was thinking there was a lot of "Aliens" in the script as well. Big bad corporation out to do anything to make a profit. Some day Giovanni Ribisi will grow up to be Paul Reiser.
The story was exactly as you expected. But it was wonderful to look at. The battle sequences at the end were awesome. Cameron really has his military stuff down. The whole thins was just great to watch. Lot's of details to flesh everything out. The 3-D was good, but we didn't see in IMAX either. It still had a plenty big enough screen though. Go see it now in the theaters on the big screen.
As I keep saying , it's a good thing all those poor benighted races out there have white folk to save them.
**Spoiler**
The lamest moment comes at the end when the benighted races decide to take on the advanced earth military. It doesn't make a lot of sense. The main plan is to attack and hope for the best. The Navi are all getting creamed when the Deus Ex Machina occurs. If somebody came up to me full of fire and brimstone and said hey we are going to attack these tanks with bows and arrows, I'd want to do little more battle plan thinking.

Blue Uhura was good, but boobless. (Should I even notice that???) I liked Michelle Hernandez better.
"Unobtainium?" Really? Really? That's the best name he could come up with? Really?
Other than that - I'd say it was very pretty, but the story was just so-so. I probably should have realized from the trailers that this would be Dances With Wolves in space. I enjoyed the critters more than the people.

...fortunately, the unobtainium was only in the beginning and was abandoned later. It really could have been anything - gold, gas, grass... unobtainium is my new fav word.
It was Terminator meets Dances with Wolves and Gorillas in the Mist with El-Greco-rasta-smurfs in cyalume land. I liked the El-Greco-rasta-smurfs in cyalume land. I was thoroughly entertained during the film, but totally forgot about it as soon as I turned on the Olympics a few minutes later. Very disposable cinema. As for the effects, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs still had the best 3D.

At 10ft tall, small boobs are still adequate. Think of the scale!
I've decided that unobtainium isn't as bad as ununbium.

"unobtainium" is an old engineering joke, used by old engineers.
Saw it last night. I thought it was spectacular. I was thoroughly entranced by the look/feel of the world. Story was predictable and simplistic, but this is Cameron - he is popular for a reason. The look of the film totally blew me away.

Caught this again recently and saw it through, just to see if it holds up. It kinda does - plot seems more painfully dumb now - the ol white savior turned blue is even more glaring - and the cgi is years old so far from cutting edge. But its still visually spectacular, surprisingly so. And once again, like within many of these but ‘park your brain outside’ flicks, I remembered very little from my first and only viewing, so it seemed fresher than it should have for me. Sigorney looked awkward as a Navi.

Here we go again. Is anyone looking forward to this? You can see it in 3-D but it's not the draw that 3-D was when the original Avatar came out.
Cameron is reported to have that said this film has to be top ten all-tim film for it to break even because it was so expensive to make.
Personally, I'm not that excited for it's release.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
