We shall see. I watched part of the trailer but thought it was giving too much away. I just read the French subtitles instead.

I heard a review on NPR yesterday. They also played a clip. It's sounds really disappointing. First, there's no "Number XXX", their just referring to the characters as "Two" and "Six". Second, according to the reviewer, Ian McKellan as Two is a scene stealer. Not a bad thing, but unlike the original, he stays Two for the duration of the mini-series. I thought the failures and replacement of each Number Two was an integral part to the original series, showing that Number Six, while not necessarily figuring out his situation, he still had the upper had.
In the clip they played, Six is a total puss. He's no McGoohan. You just want to shoot him. After hearing the clip and the review, it seems that the only reason to watch this remake is to see how bad they fuck it up.

This.
The various strategies used by the successive No. 2s were (to me) the heart and soul of the series. Much like martial arts, No. 6 would figure out how he was being attacked and adapt the appropriate counterattack. In fact the whole series was about how difficult it was to break a determined spirit either physically, emotionally or mentally.
Why even remake something like 'The Prisoner'? Why not remake something that could have been good but sucked, like 'Mantis'.

Ok, I confess. I can't remember Mantis. WTF was Mantis?
I kept saying they should remake Gilligan's Island. Then they made Survivor. Then I shut up about remakes.

I deleted the recordings after watching the first half hour. The whole point of the exercise is that #6 knows what they want and he won't give it to them. No fucking "amnesia", just a battle of wits, one that counts the victories by the changing of the #2's. To quote some forgotten comedian, why remake a good movie into a crap-fest? Why not take a crappy movie and remake it into something good? Quit ruining good TV shows! The Singing Detective was perfect - no remakes!!!! The Prisoner was perfect - no remakes!!!! Why don't we remake some Monty Python movies?!?!
GAHHHHHH!!!!!!

Quote:Budget Cuts Force British Government To Shut Down Mysterious Seaside Village
July 22, 2010 | ISSUE 46•29
LONDON—Officials announced this week that the country's ongoing financial crisis would necessitate the closure of a mysterious seaside village operated by the British government since 1967. "In light of the current economic downturn, it is unwise to maintain this secret locale any longer," said a man identified only as Number Two, referring to the bucolic village whose sole aim appeared to be the recovery of desirable information from former intelligence agents. "Plus, the cost of maintaining human chessboards, outdated penny- farthings, and our state-of-the-art escapee- retrieval sphere just proved too much. We would have closed this whole place down years ago had it not been for one particularly uncooperative resident." The man refused to directly answer any questions about the village, instead using surreal imagery and oblique references before ending the press conference with a quiet and ominous "Be seeing you."

I've jumped on the grenade. 6 episodes of shit that couldn't be saved by mcellan. Poorly written characters with ambiguous motivation. Ill spoil it here becaUse i dont want any of you to watch it: in the end, it turns out the village is all within mcellan's wife's mind and is a place where people are sent "to be fixed", but when she no longer hosts the village, six's "love interest" (poorly executed in the story)takes it on and six succumbs to the village as the new leader with him saying "i think we can make it better..."
Totally disappointing...had to watch the first 15 min of Arrival just to recover.

I’ve been rewatching the original in tandem with Danger Man. The original holds up really well. It’s a bit behind in the tech obviously, but that makes it timeless. It’s the small things that really make it work, the details, and of course McGoohan is on point, always.
I put the new series in my Netflix dvd queue. Because 2020, amirite?
