The Tree of Wooden Clogs (Italian -- 1978)

The Tree of Wooden Clogs directed by Ermanno Olmi (Italian -- 1978)

This was the most depressing movie I've ever seen.

Four peasant families rent parts of a single farmhouse from their boss (who's seldom around). Talk about poor. We're talking dust poor. They pursue subsistence with the lethargic clod-clopping intensity of a sleeping tortoise. Highlights include a man finding a coin on the ground. Can you say, clop, clop, clop, clop? (Everyone wears wooden clogs.)

Actually a well-respected slice of peasant life movie, winning the Golden Palm, but don't expect too many martial arts fights.
