The Ring
#1
This is the American remake of Ringu, which I haven't seen.
In fact, I would never have watched this except a friend loaned it to me and urged me to watch it. I tend to hold American remakes of Japanese films in contempt. True, Japan remakes some of our films. But American remakes of Japanese films tend to be watered down -- especially when it comes to horror.
And indeed, The Ring has no nudity and no ultra-violent scenes (I suspect Ringu does).

However, I must grudgingly admit that The Ring is a very well-made and suspenseful film. The shots and the editing are first class, and Naomi Watts gives a strong performance, as does the boy, who is convincingly mature for his age (hard to pull off).
Also, there is a short sequence involving a horse that really stood out. I'm still pondering how it was all done. When I mentioned this to Lady Cranefly, she said, "Interesting. That's exactly what my sister said about the movie -- an impressive horse scene."

Anyway, not as over the top as I like these days, but a very solid film that I must grudgingly respect.

Creepy atmosphere. I can't remember if there was nudity or ultraviolence in Ringu, but I do remember liking it better than The Ring. The Ring resolved much more logically. Ringu left a lot hanging, which in the end, made the experience much creepier. Without the resolution, you're left to ponder dark wells with more foreboding. I heard the sequels to Ringu all sucked.
