It's the dullest porn film ever by director Ang Lee. After directing The Hulk and Brokeback mountain, you must admit he does making interesting choices.
It's China. It's the invasion by Japan. It's the occupation of Shanghai. Let's get the college kids together and plan an assasination of the collaborators! The first sex scene comes in at 1:30. It's done under the covers. The next sex scene is basically a rape scene. But from the way it played out, you could tell she wanted it. Especially since the lead woman has more sex with the intended target of the college underground assasination squad. Nothing like bony people having sex. They did come up with a lot varied positions, but no one looked like they were enjoying themselves. Strip away the sex, it's kind of a dull melodrama about wartime Shanghai. Add in the sex, it's a dull melodrama with sex. Yes, I did rent it because it was supposed to be very risque and the first NC-17 film in a long time that actually went to first run movie theaters, although not a lot of them.
It was gorgeously shot. Mr. Lee got to use his CGI skills to depict WWII Shanghai and Hong Kong. I think they only had one bus because the same one was in every scene.
I say skip it and turn on Cinemax.
