3 long hours of sullen, dark, waiting...for something to happen. I think the take-away quote is: "It's better to have a bitter happiness than a dull, grey life."

Strange ending.

WTF... :?

Saw this several months ago. It's based on Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.
I remember when those Russian brothers first came on the science fiction scene -- though I never
got around to reading any of their novels. For a time they were highly regarded in the West.

The movie is notably eerie; it has a nice spooky atmosphere to it. But as TG points out, it's dark and turgid as well. And long.

The director, Andrei Arsenyevich Tarkovsky, did Solaris in 1972. I've never seen that, but am told it is very long and boring.

I'm thinking these Russian directors would find paint drying fascinating.

The new movie, District 9, is another film adaptation of Roadside Picnic.
Hopefully it's a little more lively.

I saw Neill Blomkamp's commercial work and short films. Their pretty amazing. I have high hopes for this one, it l looks like it has the flavor of "Alive in Joberg":

This one's funny and has Wonder Woman in it:

I was wrong about District 9 being based on Roadside Picnic. District 9 is something else entirely, and a very good movie according to TG and other reviewers.

That's what I get for blathering about movies without actually seeing them.

I was right that Stalker was based on Roadside Picnic, and I'm sort of right that there's another version coming out, tentatively titled Roadside Picnic. But it's still in development and slated for a 2010 release. Here's all I can find on it at present.
