This is South Korea's biggest grossing film ever. It's an action comedy. I even rented it (off Amazon - gonna right that off my taxes, I am).
It's another cop tale and given that this is my third K-police procedural in 2 nights, the formula is translucent. An veteran squad leader who's looking at his last big bust before retiring from a career of regret, a psycho-newbie who's young, dumb and full of...feist, a kick ass hottie, a decent yet awkward cop who's crushing on the hottie, and a tech guy. They sqaud gets sent on a snipe hunt that leads to a major bust. The twist here is that their undercover disguise is as a fried chicken joint. And the joint takes off.
It's funny if you like K-humor. I find it a bit whiny and sarcastic but it can work with the right cast. Some of this worked on me, some of it fell flat. It did deliver one lol moment with a repeated theme of car crashes. Honestly, I wasn't overwhelmed given it's success rep - if I hadn't known about it's box office, I might have had lower expectations and enjoyed it more.
Then there's the ultravi. It's teased throughout the film with odd random fights, few and far between. Then, at the final 15 mins or so, it erupts into a very satisfying finale fight, making good on the promise of the hottie fighting the villianess (cat fight!) and delivering some decent action, albeit with a lot of comic elements. There's a final joke about the leader's nickname 'zombie' that sent this spiralling off the deep end, but is just played for laughs (I think) and discarded.
Tentatively D00M recommended. There are plenty of other K-actioners I'd recommend before this but it's the latest big thing in Korea itself.
