Christina wanted to watch this, and I wasn't really familiar with the story so...
It was so bad. Ridiculous Italian accents all the way around. Jared Leto and Lady Gaga were the worst offenders, and it kept reminding me of the Super Mario games. Plus it was not that well written, so that motivations were never really clear. Also no one was ever really doing much designing, so it also wasn't clear who did that. And they made Jared Leto's character look like a buffoon who only made bad designs, but in reality he was the one who came up with the double G logo. Apparently his heirs are pretty mad about it.
Totally not recommended.

Strangely I was NOT curious, and I like Gaga.

Yeah those were some atrocious Italian accents for sure. Even Pacino’s accent seemed off.
That being said, I didn’t loathe it as much as KB. It was a power cast and had that ridiculous excess of wealth opulence. I too was completely unfamiliar with the story and kinda got where Scott was going with it - a modern tale of treachery with inner-clan feudal proportions. Motivations? Greed, power, rather simple I thought. Some of thr character transitions seemed sudden as they turned on each other, but such is feudal treachery.
I still find Gaga watchable and still prefer Driver when he’s doing comedies over dramas. I didn’t recognize Leto to his credit but I don’t really follow him. Could’ve used more Irons. Hayek was good in the mud bath.
It ran longer than I wanted it to go but I saw it through even after Stacy bailed around halfway through (she worked today and generally turns in early and will probably finish it later).
The music choices felt forced - the ol’ nostalgia play - although I did like the Monkees song in Italian. Shoulda stayed with that motive and had all the retro pop in Italian. Made me pine for Firenze even though it was Milan.
I’d give it an okay if not for the talent involved. They should’ve done better with that cast and director. With that consideration, it drops to a meh. I was more interested in the history than the retelling.
There was a sword fight tho - modern fencing - and it was the idiot of the story as the fencer. Figures.
Not D00M recommended.
