One of the complaints I've heard about Yosemite tourists today is that they just drive through the valley and don't get out an experience it.

In 1859, Horace Greely (Go West, Young Man) rode a mule 60 miles from Bear Valley to Mariposa to Clark Station to the Valley in one day. He and his party left at 6am and arrived at a cabin in the valley around 2am. They did the descent in the dark but were amazed at the sight of El Capitan in the moonlight. Greely arose the next day. Yosemite Falls was just a trickle so he didn't have good things to say about it. But Greely did ride up and down the valley and was amazed, but preferred the moonlight view. They dined at 2pm and then he left the valley heading towards Wawona. Greely hadn't been on a horse in 30 years when his party set off from Bear Valley.

I'm thinking he should have stayed a bit longer.

Chapter Two first draft is done. I'm going to do a copy edit before sharing. It wasn't like pulling teeth at all.

Chapter 2 is done. It's about the first tourists in Yosemite and Yosemite's rise to fame.

My connection at Valley PBS went dark for the last couple of weeks and I became very nervous, although the connection is still tenuous. I sent him a couple of emails to no response.

Today he responded to my last email by asking "I don't recall getting any treatments from you" Whew. Back in touch. Today will be better.

Whitney has been dogging me. I'm trying to track down a quote where he called John Muir an ignoramus. Everybody agrees he said it but no can show me the direct quote.

I am learning a lot of fun facts about Whitney mostly that every pronouncement he made was wrong. He said there wasn't any oil in Southern California. He said there wasn't any gold in the Bodie mining district. And the glaciers never carved Yosemite. He also came across a human skull that he said showed man was around at the time of the Mastodons. The skull was later proved to be a fake. The skull better known as the Calaveras Skull was found in Calaveras county. Calaveras comes from the Spanish word for Skull.

Tie to go wrestle some more with Whitney.

Another day of trying to track down a story in any one of a number of books I read about Whitney. This also ties in nicely to my other documentary "And then it burned down" In this case Whitney had a collection of 10000 of specimens his California Geological Survey collected all across California. The collection was stored in San Francisco. At some point, the whole collection went up in flames. Sure would be nice to find out where I read that story.
