Oliver Sacks: His Own Life (Kanopy)
#1
I listened to this podcast interview with the director:

https://maximumfun.org/episodes/bullseye...ric-burns/

...a few weeks ago so when I saw it was available on Kanopy I decided to give it a watch. I didn’t know much about dr. sack’s personal life outside of his portrayal in the movie Awakenings. He was diagnosed with an advanced cancer, so he wrote his autobiography and parts of this were filmed right before he died.

Motorcycles, amphetamines, jello!

He was an interesting character that didn’t get much recognition until much later in life.

I saw this listed and thought about watching it. Huge fan of his books from my college days. I recommended The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat to Tara and she recently asked if she could borrow my copy but I couldn’t find it amongst my piles and stacks of books stored at my mom’s. I was hoping it was with my textbooks (most of which I should really toss because what can you do with 30+ year old textbooks?) but I couldn’t find it. I was bummed because she seldom asks me for books I’ve recommended.

So is this worth the watch?

I would say so, especially if you've enjoyed his books. It's slow, somewhat melancholy, with a little uplift at the end. Some crazy stories...riding the beamer cycle from SF to the Grand Canyon non-stop, solo to see the sunrise was pretty wild.
