My job is not so bad...
the building next to tc, formerly known as the men's wearhouse, was taken over by some church.  they invited all the offices in the circle over for tacos today.  they had a really nice catered spread of taco fixings.  free lunch.  had to listen to some of the members being 'sociable' but they didn't get preachy at all.  they have a really nice sound system.  our it guy talked about kanye with the church rep at our table, which provided plenty of conversational cover so i could eat my tacos in peace.  needed cheese tho.  there was no cheese.

How is it a taco without cheese? That’s just not right.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

That’s cuz tacos are *Catholic*, not modern mega-church food.

So, the fencing club reopened under new county guidelines for youth sports about two weeks ago. Since this is supposed to be our new normal until a vaccine is found, we have been doing a lot or reorganizing.

Numbers are definitely down. Since we are a competitive club by design, when competitions are on hold, it gets a little tough to sell the big ticket program. For these kids, it is about getting national/international rankings, and making US Teams. Also, enough families in our club are multi-generational and they don’t want to risk grandma/grandpa, others are just worried about the kids health, can’t carpool anymore, etc.. Numbers are roughly 2/3rds of precovid/The Before Times.

Right before Covid hit, I asked Greg M, the head coach if I could cut my teaching days from 6 days to 5 days/week. My day job (Victory) had bounced back from our big move earlier than planned and I was getting my large ass kicked. We were on track to have one of our best years in our history, only I had almost no staff. Years previously it had been me full-time and 2 or even 3 part-timers. Now it was just me and my Henchman coming in on Saturdays. By last February, I was a wreck.

At the time, Greg M couldn’t give me the extra day off; we were that busy. Then Covid lockdown came along. From mid-March to mid-June, club was closed, then we had a super-intense 9-week Summer Camp until mid-August, then shut down again until mid-September.

And here we are. This week, Greg asked me about my schedule. I asked if he was looking to add more hours or fewer hours. He wanted to reduce the hours. Of the main coaches, i was the only one with another job. I said I’m still up for fewer hours. The rub is always how much less $. My healthcare is $1100/month these days, so I can’t let that number drop too far. Both parties negotiating in good faith made it easy to come to terms, though, so: For the first time in more than 20 years I’ll have two (2) entire days off/week. I’ll be teaching 4 evenings/week, running the shop 3 days/week. As business returns, I’ll add days back in.

It’s going to be a little weird for a while.

Good luck!

I don't know how anything can open until there is a vaccine. At least we don't live in Florida.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

It might be weird from here on out. I don't hold out a lot of hope for a vaccine. We have yet to develop vaccines for so many other viruses and it's been years of research there already.

Looks like the previous SARS work is paying off, the latest antibody stuff is looking better. I still think we’ll see a vaccine next year

The TC handmedown PC is live. They set me up with a nice unit.

I just need a wifi receiver and a webcam. They are on order, on the way.

Well, it’s not all go. If I can’t get the WiFi and webcam to work, that’ll be a hindrance. I went with parts that our IT recommended and they should be plug & play but it’s still 2020, ya know? Fingers crossed.

Are you on an iPhone? You might checkout EpocCam. I haven't tried it, but with it you could use your phone's camera as a webcam for your computer.

And we're live!

wifi...check!
webcam...check!

All systems go.

It's refreshing to be back on an actual keyboard, mouse and monitor instead of my laptops.

Everything worked with only a little bit of swearing.

Very grateful to TC for getting me set up with this handmedown. It seems in good enough shape. At the very least, it'll get me where I need to be until I can afford something new.

Now all I need is speakers.
