Captain Marvel

Stacy stood watch over my mom so I could catch this screener.  I sorely needed a bit of escape, if only for a few hours. Star Trek reruns and Shaw Bros films can only do so much, and I'm still here at my mom's, on call for all manner of aid.

The film was entertaining but it didn't blow me away like I was hoping it would.  I love heroines and Brie was good in the role, and the effects were eye-popping as usual. But something wasn't clicking for me. Maybe it was my state of mind. Maybe the MCU formula has overdrawn its account with me. It felt a little forced, too abrupt in its leaps of relationships and the abilities of characters to manage completely alien tech. It's a the segue between Infinity Wars and Endgame, the creation tale not only for Cap. Marvel, but also Fury, Colson & S.H.E.I.L.D. I got the feels with the Stan tribute and cameo.  It's all about Samuel L. Jackson, and Goose the cat.

Saw it. Liked it.

But it's a small film with a small story. Brie does a good job. She was a lot more solid than I thought she was going to be. She came across lightweight in the trailers. When she said she was going to kick your ass, you could actually believe it. There was some good plot twists. I was originally confused about who the bad guys were supposed to be. There so many different aliens I thought I had them mixed up.

Lots of good foreshadowing for the upcoming series. Plot points were filled.

Goose surprised me. But there was a lot of Deus Ex Machina in the film. Resolutions happened very easily.

But I liked it.

The one complaint for the film that I subscribe to was she wears a Nine Inch Nails shirt for half of the film, how about a little NIN in the soundtrack?

What? Deus Ex Machina in a comic book movie?  Unheard of.   Rolleyes

Saw it. Liked it. The Marvel Playbook still works for me.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

Rewatched this for tomorrow’s screener. Glad I did. I remembered so little of that story. The only thing I remembered was the flerkin, but even my memory of that was distorted. I thought the flerkin cut Fury’s eye in his office. Memory is a strange thing for me lately.

Seems like I was in a state with my mom when I first saw this screener. Counting my dad, it’s going on 20 years of being a caretaker for my parents - 1/3rd of my life. The strain is definitely getting to me but what else can I do? I’m so grateful that Stacy is helping a lot now.

I think I liked it better on the second viewing. Secret Invasion made more sense. And Tara reminded me of Maria Rambeau’s connection to Wandavision which was good as she’ll play into The Marvels.

I forgot Gemma Chan was in this (her make up was so heavy and this was before she stood out in Crazy Rich Asians). I still have issues with Annette Benning because she was in that goofy AFS poster, which I only ever sold one - and it was to a gal who had down’s syndrome. That was messed up and it taints every performance of Benning’s for me.

But Brie and Samuel have a good chemistry - like a buddy flick. Their banter is the best. I also like how the fights escalate from Brie’s early hand2hand with Jude to her superhero photon blast fights at the end. That’s worth a paragraph in our review perhaps.

As odd as it sounds, it’s Ms. Marvel who I’m looking forward to most in the next installment. I recall getting into Brie for a bit, binging several of her films (I still have some in my queue). I thought that was due to this but now I’m unsure. She’s good in this but not enough to make me want to binge more. Maybe it was her in Endgame. Memory is a strange thing, I’m telling ya.

We just watched the last episode of Ms. Marvel to refresh our memories about Kamala Khan. We are looking forward to actually seeing The Marvels in person this weekend. I enjoyed the first Captain Marvel immensely. It was just about fun. The movie didn't take itself too seriously. Captain Marvel wasn't a big part of Endgame, but she did her part.

I am amused that Marvel is taking a step back from all their interconnected story lines now that it has become so unwieldy to make everything tie together.

Marvel is the messiest character in the comics. Subject to many legal battles IRL.

I'm looking forward to the personal gear shift, if only for a few hours...

Our screener is in IMAX.

We deserve it.

It'll be good to see Patrick. His dog just had a major growth surgically removed so Patrick was going to bail, but Milo is doing well, so we're on.

I suppose this needs a new indie thread...
