Brothers Grimm
#1
I enjoyed this, but it was not Mr. Gilliam's best work. It looked good, as do all his films, but I felt Matt Damon was miscast, and the other brother had a small part. The film changed moods abruptly, from comedy to horror. It sometimes seemed that he wasn't sure what kind of film he was making. That was in one way distracting, but in another it heightened the horror, so it was effective. There was also a bad CGI wolf - worse than stuff in Van Helsing. And the cartoonish Frenchmen added to a feeling the movie being fluff.

I enjoyed it, but he could have done more with it. Maybe he's off his game after the Don Quixote fiasco.

DM used to be quite the afficionado of Gilliam's work. He must have something to say. What happened? Has having a child made him soft?

I'm still a huge fan of Gilliam's work but I haven't got out to see anything of his in a while. I didn't see the La Mancha doc as much as I wanted to. I didn't see this either. I did see the Python's Personal Best and felt the Gilliam's segment was the most surreal (a full half hour of Gilliam animation is a bit much, especially for fatherhood-softened DMs) although I liked the intro, especially the flying bong in the background.

After I see it, I'll reply here, assuming the forum is still operating...

Oh wait, I guess I did just reply. Never mind....

I finally saw this and thoroughly enjoyed it. No, it’s not Gilliam’s best but he reminds me of Woody Allen now. He’s created his own unique genre and is only delivering average pieces, not masterworks anymore. Nevertheless they are still entertaining, preferable to the rest of the dreck out there.

Damon was okay but immature (it’s an immature role). Heath was unremarkable and almost unrecognizable. Pryce still reminds me of ED, which only adds entetainment value because he’s the villain here, so in the back of my mind I’m always thinking ‘would ed have said that better? Why yes, I think he would’ve.’

I liked the overall twist on Grimm. I wouldn't have said it became a horror tale, more that it just got Grimm. Cheesey effects, especially the tar blob monster, but that Gilliam style still shines.  And there was even some sword fighting so it’s all good:
