The best movie I've seen all year. Absolutely loved it. Visionary. Gorgeous storytelling. Funny with family values and a great message. Solid characters. Beautiful.
And some good swordfights.

I am a bit surprised. I found the preview underwhelming. Great visuals of course (I think that's pretty much a given on animation these days) but the story looked tired.
Well at least that's better than great trailer for bad movie.

This morning I went to see Kubo and the Two Strings. I saw it in 3D. It's a moving, funny, compassionate film about families and the magic of storytelling from director Travis Knight and his amazing team at Laika Studios. Big thumbs up from me. When I told them how much I liked it they sent me this: it's a timelapse film of the head of the monkey (played by Charlize Theron) being 3D printed.
I pass it on to you, with my happy endorsement.
Worthy of note:
I've not seen that many great films in the theater this year. If you look at the reviews I've posted here, I've been entertained but not overly moved so far for 2016.
I have a soft spot for stop-motion animation.
I have a soft spot for creepy demoness villainesses.
I have a soft spot for family films.
I have a soft spot for swordfights (you all knew this - isn't it a DOOM prerequisite?)
I went with my daughter, and we seldom go to movies together anymore because she's a teen and has teen friends to go with her now. I really miss going to movies with her so it was a real treat that this was a good one.
I have another comment but it would be a total SPOILER, so I will refrain until more of you have seen this.

Saw it on DVD.
Um. Underwhelmed. The story was a bit too simplistic or maybe that was just the dialogue. There were some things that were beautiful, but I'll be hard pressed to remember them in a few months.
My favorite character was the origami samurai. There were good sword fights
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
