The Rooftop

A Chinese Kung Fu take on Bollywood. You'd think I'd like it. But no. It stars Jay Chou. For those of you stuck on this side of the Pacific, Jay Chou is a major pop star. He is sometimes dubbed the Asian Justin Bieber. That's actually an insult to Beiber. ouch, right?

The film is like 2 hours and I had to watch it over several sittings because I kept getting interrupted by stuff. I don't know why I bothered to finish it - some vain hope that it would get better. There were some interesting scenes, but those could have been cut down to a 5-10 min trailer. The fights sucked - Chou has no impact when he hits. He hits like a girl, not like Gina or Ronda, but like Judy Garland. Jay's buddies wear a lot of tie-dye (one even refers to it as 'woodstock' fashion) which is an odd depiction of Asian hippies. The love interest, Li Xin'ai has a whiny nasally voice which might be cute in a Sanrio ad, but was unbearable here. Chou wrote, directed, composed, starred...hopefully it won't give the Biebs any ideas.

Only Bollywood can do Bollywood. The music has more rhythm than Chinese pop. The Chinese colors were way too gaudy. China considered it innovative, but anyone who has seen a real Bollywood flick can tell this is a major fail.

Even a swordfight, one that ended in Jay Chou getting stabbed multiple times in the face, could not have saved this.
