X-Men Origins:Wolverine
#1
Blech.
I feel much better now that I've got that out of the way.
"There is no redemption on the road I'm taking"

If you love overacting and bad dialogue, this is the film for you. I'm thinking this film was crippled by the story elements revealed in the other 3 X-men movies. You know the place Wolverine gets his adamantium. You know about Stryker. So you know a lot of the story already and you wait for the movie to get to those points.

While you wait you have this ludicrous dialogue. There are some great action set pieces, but it's pretty boring in between them. And some of the mutant powers make no sense. One of them is a sharp shooter? Really, how do you know you have that power?

Then there is Huge Jackman. He's just too likable to be the despicable Wolverine. He tries really tough to act badass but I just don't buy it. The rest of the characters are looking for an extra dimension so they can be two dimensional.

And the film looked bad. They went with a grunge pallet which didn't work for me either.

Overacting, Bad dialogue, murky cinematography, wierd stale plot. You make the call.

There's no reason whatsoever for me to see this. There never was. Hugh has never worked for me in anything. Keanu would have made a better Wolverine. Van Damme would have made a better Wolverine. Even PPFY would have made a FAR better Wolverine.

I've been trying to think of who would have made a better Wolverine amongst today's stars, but I can't come up with anyone.

Never ever ever suggest Keanu would be good in anything. At least Hugh is likable and has some personality. I thought he did fine in the first one, but he was relegated to being the grouch with a heart of gold in the later films.

You need a young Ed Asner to play the part. He is short, broad, and plays a believable asshole. A young Charles Bronson would have been pretty darn good.

You're right, i can't think of any current actors who could do the job.

A young Mr. Grant as Wolverine? That totally works for me. Much better than Hugh.

It was that or put Dexter on steroids.

It turns out there was a teaser after the movie. I didn't see it. but it was supposed to be in Japan. Which means they are already planning the sequel and focusing on Wolverine's Samurai journey.

They are also planning a movie about Deadpool. If you've seen the end of the movie that could be problematic. It's going to be another film where we know how everything turns out. There is something to be said about telling stories in a linear fashion.

Saw the screener. It's better than Origins by far, but that's not saying much. Hugh looks better in the role now that he's older and more buff. I was entertained because it has Hirayuki Sanada (Twilight Samurai and the top ninja from my fav soap opera Revenge), Will Yun Lee (friend of Tiger Claw), ninjas (although not enough, not even one damn shuriken tossed), samurai (including a big robo silver one), and sword fights. I was entertained for most of it. It's starts out really strong, but then falls into the standard Marvel story schtick. The centerpiece is the bullet train fight and Viper. The 3D was mediocre. I was hoping for more ninjas. Can't have too many ninjas.

My guest, our graphic artist and resident comic book expert who will be the one to write the 'official' review, got into this big comic nerd argument with another critic just prior to the screening. That was super funny.

Was the argument about how the movie fell apart at the end?

This movie started off great and imploded at the end. All during the train fight I kept thinking what the hell are they doing. Every time I saw Hugh the line from Galaxy Quest kept echoing through my head "I see you managed to get your shirt off" I'm guessing that since he went to all that trouble to look that ripped, there was no way he was keeping his shirt on.

My problem with the ending was it's lack of logic (Shut up, DM) Mariko's protector is now her captor and now he's her protector again? Huh? I think they could of explained Viper's powers a bit more. She was just 2D evil. And how were Wolverine's powers to be transferred to Yashida? Drilling through his claws? Then what the hell was that bug on Wolverine's heart doing?

I do own the comics that this movie was based on so a lot of the images in the movie were straight out of the pages. Particularily the Wolverine pulling all those arrows and ropes.

More Ninjas. More Ninjas.

It went over which issues the Japan storyline took place - like which number (our graphic artist P. has these all memorized). What made it funny was I think that the other movie critic was just jerking P's chain while P thought he was being all authoritative and such. That critic didn't really offer any facts. He just goaded P into babbling more.

I agree with you. It started like there was a story and then as the film progressed, it was evident that there really wasn't one. Viper definitely needed more explanation. P said if you knew the comic, it made sense. Whatever.

If I was that ripped, I wouldn't be wearing a shirt either. Not even in a Polar vortex.

Well this is the NEW Wolverine, not the other one (already reviewed). And of course the back story here seems to ignore the other one.

It was entertaining and there were some pretty good fights. But the back story problem: how does it fit with the other Wolverine movie? Was he already an immortal mutant with healing powers who was only later given the claws? Or is this just a money grab?

And (SPOILER ALERT) if the robot/man in suit cut off the adamantium claws, how did he "grow" them back?

Actually, we posted the next Wolverine flick on the old thread.  That started here - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...7#pid17487.  ED likes to make new threads.  I prefer to post on old ones.  I had our GA do the official KFM review because I didn't really care for it and had little to say.  See http://www.kungfumagazine.com/TOC/index....ticle=1104.

Whew. That's much better.

The forum is just DM's OCD enabler.
