Rather formulaic - a protagonist who doesn't fit in tries to invent stuff and always causes disasters. He makes a breakthrough but it has to be kept secret because it's against the social norm. He becomes a hero and then his secret is exposed. But there's a bigger problem and a chance for redemption. Typical repeated tag line dialogue like a chorus. Very predictable.
The 3D is quite good, a lot like Avatar, especially the dragon flying scenes through the clouds. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs still stands as the best 3D flick out there for it's sheer audacity in exploiting the effect.
Why do all the Vikings sound like Shrek? Ferguson is okay but underused. Wiig is horribly underused. I couldn't get used to America as a lithe Nordic blonde hottie.
The dragons are colorful.
T & the folks liked it well enough but were also somewhat underwhelmed.

On a tiny airplane screen in 2D, this movie really sucks.

That's how I saw it. It wasn't too awful. Keeping my fingers crossed for something better on the plane ride from San Juan to L.A.

On the big TV on the new Blu-Ray player but not in Blu Ray format, it was passable. It was fun playing name the actor as it always is with animated features. I'm glad I didn't know it was Ugly Betty playing the girl or I would have been thrown.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

This is a live version of the show with huge robot Dragons. I did an interview with one of the cast members (see <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=1075">http://www.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/art ... ticle=1075</a><!-- m -->) although ironically she wasn't playing the role that night as they alternate main performers. The show was at the HP and I got comped. There was a huge digital canvas on the floor and backdrop which provided all sorts of effects. One was particularly good where the Hiccup character is running while suspended by a wire and the digital image is changing like a videogame to look like he's running over bridges and cliffs. There were some other artsy attempts, flailing efforts at wannabe Cirque with abstract puppets. There were sword fights (really just a lot of flailing about) and bollywood dances (breakdancing vikings actually). Mostly, it was about the dragons which were pretty cool but not really enough to carry the show as they lumbered about. They tried to recount the movie, but if you didn't see it, the live show didn't make a lick of sense. T&I both agreed that it was fun to see for free, but we would have been bummed if we paid for it.
Bottom line: the 3D was better in the movie.
