Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

SNW can still be playful. Pike, Uhura, Chapel & La’an are converted to Vulcans. It’s self satirical but also revealing as Spock relives childhood trauma about being bullied for being half human. La’an, who is descended from Khan, goes Romulan but it was TOS when Romulans first appear but Pike & La’an have time travelled and know but that’s officially redacted. Pelia talks about her LSD use (she was a roadie for the Grateful Dead) and Scotty & Kirk bond over scotch, which is endearing. A fun ep, not to be taken too seriously.

An Erica Ortegas ep. She’s the new helmswoman and not a fav character because she’s disconnected to TOS while everyone else has some tie. She was traumatized by a Gorn attack and in this ep, get marooned on a desolate moon with a Gorn. It’s Enemy Mine or Hell in the Pacific, but also the precursor to ST:TOS Arena (Spoiler Alert Metrons End Spoiler).

SWN retconned the Gorn from TOS and they have a lot of explaining to do. Like how the Klingons evolved in TNG, the Gorn are now CGI monsters that breed like parasitically like Xenomorphs. The issue is that TOS made first contact with the Gorn in Arena, but in SNW, the Gorn are a threat to the federation like the Klingons of old. Everyone on the SNW Enterprise knows Gorns so why does the TOS Enterprise know. I hope this gets resolved somehow, or that they just confess and make it another timeline like the Kelvin one.

Season finale
The landing party stuck the landing. The finale tied together a lot of stray plot threads neatly and delivered major feels with the loss of a supporting character. Pike’s ultimate fate, which we all know, makes this so much more tragic, and how the ultimate finale of this show goes down will be a true test. Spock & Kirk do their first mind meld, establishing their upcoming relationship in a slightly heavy handed way, but it worked, especially in regards to La’an.

This season, SNW really hit its stride. I can hardly wait until next season. LL&P.
