Movies that were so godawful, even I couldn't get through it

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

Christina put this on, and we did make it all the way through, although I was ready to bail after five minutes, but I didn't say anthing. I'll spoil the ending, so stop here if you plan on watching it.

It starts out with a lady influencer and her boyfriend having dinner. Then they get on a luxury yacht (she got the trip for free) with very rich people. Pretty much everyone is an asshole. One rich lady forces the crew to "take a swim and enjoy life." That causes dinner to be late during rough seas, and apparently also causes everyone to get food poisoning. (Some humor made from that.) The next day the ship is attacked by pirates and sunk. (Major plot hole there. Why would they sink the ship? How would that make them any money?) A few survivors land on an island, and the only one with any survival skills was a menial worker on the ship but she takes charge and becomes - you guessed it - an asshole too. No one bothers to explore, so after some time, the leader and the influencer wander and randomly find that there is a resort on the island. It ends with the leader about to murder the influencer for finding the resort.

It was super misanthropic. No one was likeable. Should we call that nihilistic too? And they went nuts for this crap at Cannes. It won the Palm d'Or.

That's cuz they're all assholes at Cannes. Assholes are all about crap. That's what they do, those assholes.

Updated my post to start with the title. Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize I was wasting my time changing the post title.

Honestly, we're all wasting our time here on D00M.

But it's a critical part of self care in my book, ya know?

The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Torro, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving and Emily Blunt. What a great cast. How did we miss this? We caught a bit of the trailer while doing the Netflix scroll and thought we would put this in the queue.

That was a mistake. So slow. So overacted. It probably hurts the movie that we all know this story and how it plays out. But oh, boy, we couldn't take it. We got to the point where the villagers come to the mansion and demand that Benicio be brought to town for justice. We then quit.

Was it better than that one with Jack Nicholson? That was pretty bad. Back in the day, I liked Wolfen with Albert Finney and Gregory Hines. No doubt DM has seen it too - I saw it at the Quad.

El Condo is currently on Netflix. The film poses the question what if Chilean dictator August Pinochet was actually a vampire. I almost stopped within the first few minutes when a woman had her head smashed open with a sledge hammer. But I gave it some more time. The filmmakers play loose with the rules of being a Vampire and the first ten minutes or so of the film is how the vampire becomes the president of Chile. Then we jump forward to after Pinochet is dead and wondering what to do with his life while his five children try to determine if they will have any inheritance. Also a nun shows up to see if she can exorcise Pinochet.

The film is shot in B&W and I believe is Chile's entry into the academy awards. The film seemed to be going out of it's way to be artistic. I switched it off.

Wish (2023)

It was fascinating to watch Disney fall flat on its face for about an hour, then I lost interest.

We found a tiny yet dense pocket of merch at the California Experience at Disney, and we were like ‘oh right, forgot about that one’ and rightly so. It’s painfully formulaic, even opening with the storybook intro. The animation, the songs, the characters, the animal friends, even the pacing was exactly like so many other Disney films. For a sec, I wondered if the script was ai generated. Such a shame. They put a ton of work into it, like any animated Disney production, but it misses every shot it takes.

Not D00M recommended.

Greg could not have been farther off the mark with his Shang-Chi comparison. It’s more like Thr Hunger Games. It’s Cena & Awk doing what they do, only much more poorly than usual.

The fight choreo is almost funny but after two Falcon punches played out like groin stomps, and then several flying objects sticking into walls, I lost interest.

I bailed at around the halfway mark.

I'm still clawing my way through. It's pretty terrible. I kind of wanted to see a scene with Simu but life maybe too short to keep watching.

I feel ya. I didn't make it to Simu. If you do, post the time he appears and I may just jump to it. Otherwise, I'm out.

Went through a slew of stuff last night that we couldn't finish. Started off with Luck, an animated feature on Apple+. Had to stop after the unrelenting sadness of the story and the terrible animation and lack of intelligence. We watched Ep03 of Time Bandits and decided that was enough of that show because it wasn't getting any better and Lisa Kudrow needs to learn a new schtick. After that it was Ethan Cohen's 'Drive Away Dolls' Excited by the adult sexy time but just bored by the whole plot of mistaken identity and the need to get one of the girls laid.

The previous night I dipped my toe into The Union. It's about what you expect. It's as bad as you expect. Maybe not bad, but so derivative.

To recap: No to Luck, Time Bandits, Drive Away Dolls, and The Union.
