Star Trek Into Darkness
#46
Balance of Terror was cool because the Romulan warbird looks so menacing. Great episode - so much going on with the engaged couple, Kirk vs. Romulan Sarek and the Spock racist thing.

The Corbomite Maneuver was cool because Balok's ship is awesomely huge. The mannequin still looks like a mannequin and Balok is just odd in the end.

Both episodes have lame navigators who only make that lone appearance - shoulda worn red shirts.

I've been enjoying the enhanced CGI on the original Star Trek immensely until Who Mourns for Adonais? That's the one with the Greek god. When the god's hand reaches out into space, the new effects made it into a wavering green hand. If memory serves, the original was just a hand in space which was far more surreal. The new green hand was silly.

I am dubbing such CGI update gaffs as Bantha botches. Remember the original Star Wars with the cool elephants in costume? That was friggin brilliant. Luved those Banthas. Then, in the new CGI enhanced version, many Banthas were replaced by digital iguanas. That was stupid. Nothing beats an elephant in a costume.

In the redone original series, the Gorn now blinks. Not sure if that's a Bantha botch or not. It's distracting, and I think I prefer the Gorn's lidless stare. It's still a great rubber suit monster. Alas for the days of rubber suit monsters....

I have a review that doesn't deserve it's own thread so I'm posting it here:

Free Enterprise (1998)
Two really annoying Trekkie nerds meet Bill Shatner and one is Will from Will and Grace. This is painfully bad, like a Big Bang Theory with no bang. The nerds manage to bang a lot of hotties, which makes me question their nerddom. While it's true that like in Big Bang Theory, nerds are sort of sexy now (a regrettable turn of events - if only that happened when DM was young - like with goth, he would have ruled that world), these nerds are so shallow and self-centered, they are really annoying. Lots of in-jokes for Sci Fi nerds, and I'm embarrassed how many I got. The dialog is horrible, very forced, and the story meanders in a pointless way. Some gratuitous toplessness. The shame is that Shatner is pretty funny, sort of like an expansion of that SNL skit where he told his trekkie fans to get a life. In some vain attempt to make this film work, I kept imagining the two main nerds where Greg and Scapino, as it's based in LA and both of them know what Logan's Run was. Didn't work tho - I could hear Greg wincing and then commenting on how he did a shoot at the Gorn rock too (a minor scene takes place there - someday I must make a pilgrimage myself) and believe it or not, this film was so bad, it was even beneath projecting on Scapino. I only watched it through to the end so I could post a complete review here.

And now, I regret that. Mad

Not sure when I'll get down there next but that is on my bucket list.

Well sort of.

Actually I don't really have a bucket list.

Just a long list of regrets.

Which I've forgotten, for the most part.

We should do a full on DOOM shoot. Now where can we get a gorn costume?

BTW, I just got invited to attend a Lucha Underground shooting. That's El Rey's exclusive series, which I do enjoy. They shoot in L.A. on the weekends - starting up in January again for new episodes. Unfortunately, getting there and back again would be on my dime, so I have to find an excuse. You know how much I luv pro wrasslin, especially Luchadors.

Been there, done that. Gorn provided courtesy of Photoshop. If I wasn't so tired, I'd hunt down that picture...

...I've dreamed of this since I had my first cell (a startac of course). And my iPhone text alert is the classic ST communicator chirp (although several people have commented that it sounds like a dolphin).
