August Whit is the real name of August West, the character depicted in the Grateful Dead’s epic addiction ballad Wharf Rat. Only they changed the name to protect the guilty. Whit hated that. It was his only claim to fame. He was a homeless drunk, and always told people of his claim but no one believed him. He died alone, in the cold, in a puddle of his own excrement. A deadhead stole his identity to sling shoes online and made a killing with knock off crocs in the early days. It was total luck. He has no talent for sales whatsoever. He lives on a super yacht now and continues to sling shoes hoping lightning will strike again.
