If it's a DOOM Roadtrip ™ shouldn't i drive?

Oh, wait! Can't make it. Busy that weekend. I'll be in Australia.

What?! You gotta give us more details about that, Ivor. Should Greg send you Darth Tater?

I've been there several times. Not a decent single malt on the bloody continent and the food sucks. They don't drink Fosters. They think "Miller Genuine Draft" is good, exotic beer. You'd be happier just coming to Doom South -- that's should be downunder enough for any true Scotsman. Mad

Sigh. Well, if you're bound and determined to go to Oz, here's a few tips:

When Australians say, "How are you going?" they mean "How are you?" They are not asking you to leave or what method of transportation you'll use to depart.

Never use the word "fanny" in polite company. In America, that's a harmless euphemism for someone's posterior. In Australia, it's the equivalent of the c* word. You don't want to know how I found that out, or in front of whom.

Bring any books you want to read rather than plan to buy them there: they are horrifically expensive there. A paperback you'd buy here for $7.95 will run at $15-20 there.

You're not allowed to bring food into Australia. When you arrive at the airport, you will be met in baggage claim by a food-sniffing beagle. I'm not kidding.

Wild Animal Parks are much more fun there because they don't have the liability laws that we do in the US. Aussies are much more willing for you to get up and close and personal with the wildlife, because you can't sue them if you get attacked.

Seriously though, let me know if you need hotel, transportation or tourist advice for any of the major cities. Stenograph has sent me there several times.

So am I to understand that I am the only one commited enough to make the tiniest effort to visit DOOM South?

Greg - Would it be worth your while to host a single DOOM brother? Or should we try again for April Fools Day or July 4th or summat?

I am so ashamed. The number of times Greg made the journey North and we can't even mount a fully-armed assault on Hollywood...

Maybe we don't deserve to crash the Dreamgirls party. I'm calling Beyonce now...

Thanks for the tips and offer of info. I am going with The Grrl who is working for some of the 7 or 8 days that we will be there. Hotel is taken care of and one of the locals has provided a list of "things to do in Sydney when you are dead". I think I'll be able to locate a single-malt (it is one of my mutant super-powers) and I'll just forego the beer option unless I luck into something.

Already knew about the "fanny" thing; imagine the horror if you went there and your name was "Fanny"! Had heard the same thing about the beer situation (same thing in London; bad American beer is the rage and they are surrounded by great ales; go figure). Great tip on the book situation, though. That will double the weight of my luggage, however.

Next trip will probably be Gleneagles in Scotland in the Fall, maybe Germany as well.. Life sure is rough!

I don't know if they make them kerosene-powered, but really, the best solution for long distance travel and needing lots of books is to get yourself a PDA. I've currently got a half dozen David Weber novels on the one Greg bought me a couple years back. Cost of downloadable books is the same as or less than purchasing paperback or reduced-price hardcover if it's brand new/just released. You get plenty of font and color choices and with the backlighting, the screen is comfy and easy to read regardless of the light conditions wherever you are (ask Greg, I bring the thing with me to theatres so that I can read instead of be bored to death by the onscreen ads before the previews start). Obviously the lack of bulk, weight is the major plus for traveling. Only bummer is making sure you can charge it (current is different in OZ so you need a specialty charger - can't just put an adapter on the plug!), and there's definitely wear and tear on your thumb because you only get a paragraph at a time on the screen and have to "page down" constantly.

Whenever I travel, I usually bring most of my books on the PDA and bring just a couple of paperbacks. After all, there's that miserable 15 minutes during takeoff and landing where they won't let you have anything electronic turned on.

I looked up Gleneagles, Scotland on Google.

Most of the hits are related to the G8 summit that is (was?) taking place there.

Is our own Poppin' Fresh Yeti headed to the G8? That'd be a kick in the head....

..not that we don't care about the PPFY's oz trip (bastard), but it looks like you're on your own ED. I can't squeeze off the time for a Doom South run ofr St. Pats sadly. There's just no way I can get the time off now. So go down and represent, if you can. If not, we admire your spirit, at the very least.

We're thinking about another Disney run, but that wouldn't be until after summer.

...let's talk about me some more. Gleneagles...no, the G8 is gone and the Aunty Globalists have hobbled off to oraganize more torchings of McDonalds via cell-phone and internet, both of which are products of globalization.

I'm thinking St. Pat's is out as a party day. I just didn't get around to the planning. But El Dingo, you are still more than welcome to use the pad that weekend. The Queen might even offer her manor, if you and she are so inclined.

You should have come at Christmas when I had tickets for the park but couldn't go and couldn't find anybody to take them.

ED can drive down to LA, pick up Greg, see the Dreamgirls set, and then throw a sack over him all pirate-shanghaied style to drive him back up for our St. Pat DOOM gathering at Gary's. We can leave him at the bus stop in the morning.

Hey, it's St. Patrick's Day! Happy Green Beer, everyone!

And, how appropriate that, in the world of Doom LA Gatherings...

...Nothing Happened!

I feel like I belong. Thank you all so much.

I'm still having the folks over. And I'm wearing my Ireland baseball cap. Who says Doom doesn't know how to party?
