When I studied iaido (blade drawing) there were ten cuts. One was to assist someone in seppuku. In the formal ritual, there is a beheading assistant. It was a tricky cut because you were supposed to sever the spine but not the windpipe. When done properly, the head would slump forward into the lap. When done improperly, the head would skitter across the floor. Or you'd just miss. When Mishima committed seppuku, they say his second missed several times.
