Got a call from my stepfather. The cell phone wasn't working too well in the hospital, but I gleaned from that first call that the "routine" colonoscopy my mom was undergoing today found a problem and they had to do a more extensive procedure. Apparently she had damage to her spleen and other sources of "leakage" that the doctor had to cauterize.
A few calls later, I'm told she's being kept in the ICU overnight and part of the day tomorrow, but that she should be fine, her doctor says he fixed all the issues, she's comfortable and resting, and should be fine. Stepdad says she's okay, no need to fly out. By last phone call he was definitely a lot less stressed sounding and even making a few jokes, so I take it that I'm not supposed to be terrified. Offered several times to fly out, he said no, not required, I should be able to talk to her tomorrow.
Keeping my fingers crossed that all is indeed well, or on its way to being well. Hate not being there.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
