The Wrestler
#1
I really wanted to like this film. I love pro-wrasslin. LB, ED, KB & DM used to go. We used to pay good money to see it. We used to make the trek up the Palacio de Bovino, down some sixers and huff a j in the lot and have a grand time. An Oscar-nominated flick about past-his-prime pro wrasslin? I'm all over that like a wet blanket on a flaming stuntman.

But it sucked. The film is so painfully predicatable that I knew every plot move and this is without even seeing the trailer. It goes exactly where you predict it will go - the sense of being a has been, the relationship with the daughter, the stripper with the heart of gold - even the ending is totally predictable from the poster alone.

Maybe it's because I hate Mickey Rourke. I hated him when he stuck his pecker in the popcorn in Diner. I hated him when played big-white-man-on campus in Year of the Dragon. I hated him when he fed Kim cough syrup in 9 1/2 weeks. Sure, it's his big comeback and he's all buff now, but do we really have to see his bare ass twice? He's just overrated, just like the Wrestler.

There was a short moment when they started to develop this idea of perfomers on stage (wrasslers & strippers) versus their real miserable lives, but it failed to develop Marissa's character any more. It never got past Rourke. This film was so disappointing, even Marisa stripping couldn't save it.
